Guest guest
Is it at all possible for us westerners to obtain spiritual liberation? Or appropriate for us to even desire it in this time? when we find ourselves surrounded by so much suffering and violence in the world.

Our desire for liberation has to balanced in a healthy way against the social duties and responsibilities of the householder and the needs of our time, otherwise the pursuit of liberation is nothing other than the expression of our own egoism. Guest guest
guy

Why is spiritual liberation to be avoided in a time of suffering and violence in the world? Would there not be an even more pressing need for spiritual development in such times. If for no other reason than to gain perspective on and to avoid being dragged into the hysteria of that time. Then there are the benefits that accrue to others with whom the spiritually informed come in contact. One's over-all goal is to come into the presence of the divine and to see that divinity as their own identity regardless of the environment that one finds oneself in.

What do the 'needs of our time' have to do with a decision to forego spiritual liberation? Who defines the needs? Who defines your identity? Why are those needs and your identity incompatible? If so, then the needs must be re-evaluated.

Surely, you are not suggesting that it is okay to allow yourself to be co-opted by evil events and the emotional reactions to them at the expense of losing contact with your spiritual nature.

omprem
