Question for all the experienced Mysore

travellers - malaria meds or not? If so, what? (Don't worry,

I'm not so completely stupid as to rely on an online

message board for medical advice, I will be asking a

tropical medicine clinic the same question. I am curious

about other people's experience though)

I'm

heading out at the end of October for 3 or 4 months -

maybe I'll get to meet some of you in person.

I was advised by those in the know that it is

unheard of that Yogis in Mysore had contracted Malaria.

The opinion was fairly unanimous that malaria pills

aren't worth the hassle and that its better to use

Homeopathic prevention. Another advisor, whose opinion I

greatly respect, said that he'd never heard of anyone

getting Malaria while taking Homeopathic prevention. He

also said though that if my intuition told me to take

standard pills I should follow it. Good advice it seems.

Most important however was to prevent getting bitten

in the first place for which Autan was

recommended.

I have yet to see if this advice is any good. I

will also be there at end of October.

Best

wishes

Luke.

I think it depends on the particular strain of

malaria whether the medication is effective or useless.

I've gone over with and without medication and been

fine either way. Another thing is that some people

have weird reactions to the pills but I haven't

experienced that personally. Avoid getting bit as much as you

can. (not always possible) because they carry other

stuff too. I'll be there also, so look forward to

meeting you~~~ Wondering if you took meds for Kovalam

when you went?

Does anyone have a view on those plug-in devices

which take tablets which fill a room with something

that repels the mozzies? I know they are very

effective, but are they OK for us to sleep in a room with

them in, night after night?

Also, are the

repellants safe to keep rubbing on the skin? - I'm thinking

that the time from skin to liver is a matter of

minutes!

I'm not sure what chemical the repellants use, but

whatever it is must have an effect on people too,

presumably, if used for a long time.
