Guest guest
I agree that it's theoretically possible that somebody with the most amazingly deep personal practice, who has studied in Mysore with Pattabhi Jois for years, might not have a shred of teaching ability.

(Although what "teaching" ability means in the context of Mysore-style -a.k.a. correct - ashtanga teaching is perhaps a different question).

Theoretically. In practice I have done workshops with several certified teachers and found them all to be excellent and inspiring teachers.

I think there is a great deal of value in things like John Scott's "techniques of teaching" courses, which he makes quite clear do not qualify anybody to be a teacher, but to provide some guidance on how to teach to those who already fulfil the basic requirements - several years of deep and dedicated practice including study in Mysore. Guest guest
oops I mistakingly pressed send. I agree with you Alan. I too have studied with certified teachers and there is no mistaking their depth of knowledge, adjustments, insight, and of course, incredible practices. I just dont' think one needs to wait 10 years before starting to assist in ashtanga classes. A strong steady consistent practice of ashtanga with years put into the practice, plus a teacher training program of some sort to begin to understand anatomy, asanas, philosophy, etc. combined with humility, open heart and an open mind makes for a good beginning teacher. I am lucky here in NYC to have practiced, learned and become friends with ashtangis with incredible practices and hearts. I watch, I learn, I soak it all up.
