Guest guest
Dancedynamic,
"others will say that strong adjustments are too painful" - right, why we should been adjusted at all? I've learned the Marichys without any adjustment - why not wait till the body is able to go into the last step of every posture? Let the body be the guide, not the strong teacher's adjustment. - Or what benefit do you see in adjusments? Lu
Guest guest
Hi Lu, in answer to your question about adjustments - I see two benefits to them:

(1) they can show you that although you might think you're doing something correctly, you're actually not. It's better to feel in you body what the correct position should be, than to be told it, process it through your conscious mind and misinterpret it back to whatever you feel comfortable with.

(2) a strong adjustment can take you beyond your limits of fear and show that your body is actually capable of a lot more than you mind thinks it is.

Of course, bad adjustments can be irrelevant or even dangerous, which is why being able to trust in the teacher's experience and judgement is so crucial in ashtanga.

I personally find the more verbal teaching style - typical in iyengar classes - irritating and distracting. Although I don't deny that it is possible to learn things from it.
Guest guest
Alan, yes!! You're right, and I agree totally (now). For this reasons adjustments really are helpful. Lu
