Guest guest
Lu,

Why don't you try to to Yoga Journal online? (Go to their website and fill in the form).

Consider however that reading Yoga Journal is basically a waste of time: first, because there is not much (almost nothing, I would say) about astanga yoga in their coverage [YJ focuses mainly on iyengar yoga]; second, YJ targets essentially an American readership, so that their point of view and their informations are not necessarily useful to us Europeans.

Much better to go to the source and read books like Yoga Mala, the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanisads.

[btw, ich bin kein Teenie mehr.]
Guest guest
Just wanted to say that I would not agree that reading Yoga Journal is a waste of time. It may be true that they don't give much coverage to Ashtanga, but they have had a few pretty major articles on the subject in the past and have (even recently) had contributions by several top Ashtanga teachers. As Dan points out, there haven't been a lot of books on Ashtanga yoga so far, other than the handful which cover the postures in primary series. The articles in Yoga Journal have gone a little deeper. And if one could see the value in studying yoga beyond the confines of Ashtanga, then there's tons of useful info in Yoga Journal. I don't think there is any emphasis on Iyengar or any particular school of yoga and I'm not sure why anything in the publication would specifically not be useful to Europeans. Yes, it is a commercial publication, and there is a lot of fluff and a lot of advertising. Kind of like this little forum - use what you can, skip the rest if you want.

Anyway, just my opinion. I find YJ very useful and interesting. And I predict there will be more coverage of Ashtanga there in the future.

Also, I seem to be learning that it can be better to see the good in all things and to learn from everything that comes your way. Guest guest
TLSlade,

It's so good to see you back again, voicing your own opinion!

Regarding Yoga Journal, my point is: is it worth the money you spend for an overseas subscribtion to learn about yoga from a U.S. magazine? Or shouldn't we, who don't live in the U.S., do better to read the original books on yoga instead, like the Bhagavad Gita or the Upanishads? I sincerely prefer the second option, and I would buy a copy of YJ only if I knew that it has an article on astanga yoga in it. Just my opinion, of course.
