Guest guest
Hi everyone,
I would like to incorporate yoga into my life and hope to absorb many of its benefits. I haven't started yet because i am unsure where to begin. Are there different levels of yoga? What would you suggest for a beginner? Is ashtanga the most excruciating form of yoga? Can you please suggest a video for a beginner. There seems to be an overload of information out there, i don't know whose advice to take. I'm hoping the diversity and intelligence of this club will steer me in the right direction. Thank you all.
Guest guest
don't know if ashtanga is the most excruciating or not, depends on what abilities or inabilities you start with i guess.

most here, given that this is an ashtanga board after all, would encourage you to seek ashtanga. it is fine to start ashtanga as a "beginner" in yoga (who here is not a beginner?). If you do want to give ashtanga a try, i would recommend going to one of the sveral teachers inthe LA area certified to teach ashtanga:
noah williams, http://www.ashtangayogashala.com/
chuck miller, http://www.yogaworks.com/
also consider jorgen christianssen, http://www.mahayoga.com/info2.html

theses teachers all teach new students and old in the style called mysore pracice, in which they evaluate the student and have them progress through the series a few postures at atime as they are ready.

to learn more about ashtanga in particular, there's some good links over at the FAQ section on the other ashtanga board over at EZBoard:
http://pub42.ezboard.com/byoga84291

as well as ashtanga.com and the web site put together for pattabhi jois:
http://www.ayri.org/

on of my favorite general info sites is ghita technologies, put up by carl nelson: http://www.ghita.com.au/dispatcher/ghitasplash.html

try running thru the ezboard site, not a bad starting place. book/video reviews, discussion of postures, general social gabbing etc.
Guest guest
Ashtanga is fine for beginners. I came to yoga as a complete beginner aged 50, no yoga previously at all, straight into Mysore style.

Mind you, you've got to have a good and patient teacher willing to give you the time. I was very lucky - I live for 6 months of the year in Penzance, Cornwall, 10 minutes walk from John Scott's shala.
