Guest guest
Maybe I'm confusing Eddie Stern with another Astanga teacher, but I seem to recall reading that those who want to practice at Stern's shala (and are not just from out of town) are obliged to commit themselves to a certain rate of attendance at the Stern Shala.

Anyone in the know care to comment? Guest guest
I am in the know and I do care to comment. Eddies yoga school is a very busy place where only Mysore style astanga yoga is taught (other than the occasional sanskrit class). Eddie asks students new to the method to first watch how the practice is taught, and to pay for a month of classes if they elect to study at the shala. Since there are literally dozens of places in NYC to drop in for a class, and since mysore style practice doesn't lend itself to drop-ins (unless the student is somewhat self sufficient in their practice) it really works better this way. When there are 45 people practicing, it is dificult to give attention to someone who may not come back the next day. By having monthly classes only, a student will get a really good idea of what its like to work with a given instructer, and to be brought through the practice correctly.
If you pay for a month and dont come to practice thats a different story- any teacher worth their salt will exprees their concern as to why you arent around.
People from out of town are welcome to practice for less than a month, sometimes for just a few days, esp. if they practice mysore style with a reputable teacher.
It really seems like a better system, because you end up with a better quality of student, one who is dedicated to the practice and isnt "practicing around" with other teachers.
In the words of El Senor "mixing methods leads to insanity"
Guest guest
"[exclusive practive at one shala] really seems like a better system, because you end up with a better quality of student, one who is dedicated to the practice and isnt "practicing around" with other teachers."

This being so, then how can anyone castigate JivaMoo for the very same desire of wanting their teachers and students to exclusively practice at THEIR Shala?

We have to be consistent here, to be fair.

If it's fair for Eddie Stern to ask people to only practice his way, why is it UNFAIR for JivaMoo to ask the same thing of THEIR system? Guest guest
If it's fair for Eddie Stern to ask his students and assistant teachers to only practice his way, why is it UNFAIR for JivaMoo to ask the same thing of student and teachers of THEIR system? Guest guest
If I am practicing ashtanga properly, six days a week minus moon days, I don't have a whole lot of energy left over for other classes (which is not to say I don't take them occasionally). Plus this is my personal practice, and is nobody else's business. Similarly, there are people who teach at Jivamukti who have their own, personal practices that are nobody's business but their own and their teachers'. Neither Jivamukti nor Eddie Stern demands exclusivity from their students. And only one of those employers has asked their employees to choose between their jobs and their personal lives. Guest guest
Eddie Stern does demand exclusivity from his students.

Since this is so, it means that JivaMoo teachers who choose to practice at Eddie's shala are required, by Eddie, to devote themselves to nothing less than a 6 days a week schedule of traditional astanga vinyasa practice.

It follows that these same Jiva Moo teachers probably do not have the time and energy left to ALSO do the hybrid Jiva Moo practice, and are then teaching a system they themselves are not practicing. This is a legitimate concern for JivaMoo management.

I doubt very much that Eddie Stern would hire assistant teachers for his Shala that don't regularly practice traditional astanga vinyasa.

If it's fair for Eddie to set such a standard for his teachers, its also fair for Jiva Moo to do the very same with its teachers. Guest guest
I like your honest reply. if you begin your practice around 7am-7:30 how crowded is it? how likely is it that you get adjustments from eddie or another teacher. i've never been and am very curious. is it is a scene? do you see a bunch of jivamukti defectors there? do they have showers, etc? ashtangayoga, hedblown <no_reply> wrote: > > > eddies number 212 431 3738 > It can take up to several lifetimes to complete the primary series. > Where's the fire? > > ashtangayoga, clk0893 <no_reply> wrote: > > what is the number to eddie stern's studio? what are the hours of > > mysore classes mon-friday? also how long does it take on average to > > complete the primary series? thanks! Guest guest
The room is happening at that time (no scene) - but you always get adjustments. As for the people, well they are just serious students practicing. ashtangayoga, clk0893 <no_reply> wrote: > I like your honest reply. if you begin your practice around 7am- 7:30 > how crowded is it? how likely is it that you get adjustments from > eddie or another teacher. i've never been and am very curious. is it > is a scene? do you see a bunch of jivamukti defectors there? do they > have showers, etc? > > ashtangayoga, hedblown <no_reply> wrote: > > > > > > eddies number 212 431 3738 > > It can take up to several lifetimes to complete the primary series. > > Where's the fire? > > > > ashtangayoga, clk0893 <no_reply> wrote: > > > what is the number to eddie stern's studio? what are the hours of > > > mysore classes mon-friday? also how long does it take on average > to > > > complete the primary series? thanks!
