I’m scheduled to attend a Doug Swenson Primary

Series workshop in February. Can anyone provide any

insight as far as what to expect from his teaching style?

I know he wrote that book Yoga for Dummies (or

something like that) but I’m much more familiar with

David’s work. I really want to know if it will be worth

my time.

I’m grateful for any comments.

That may be true, but if certification is such an

important requirement, then why is David Swenson listed

within the classes section of ashtanga.com? Supposedly

the classes pages and the teacher listings contained

there are officially approved by Pattabhi Jois. Before

you get yourself work up in to a tizzy and lecture me

about how the entire Swenson family are yoga criminals,

may I suggest that someone, somewhere thinks David

has something to offer. At the very least the

administrator of that website thinks so.

At least you will be doing yoga, thinking about

your practice, and spending time with a (from what i

hear) gentle soul. No-one has perfection to offer, but

he is not annoying, has his own wisdom and you may

just learn something about yourself if not your

practice. You'll come away with more than if you hang out

in a chatclub for instance.
(In part it also

depends how refined your first series practice is - if

you have lots of room for growth...go.)

I recently talked to a friend who attended one of

doug's weekend workshops and he really enjoyed it. My

friend has been practicing astanga for about a year and

enjoyed doug's style. He said the first day and a half

was very challenging and the last day was meditative.

Seems very qualified, and yes, he's a professional yoga

teacher.

Thanks so much for your comments. I currently

take first series from two different wonderful

individuals, neither of whom has ever been to Mysore, much

less studied with PJ. Although certain people may

condemn my teachers and accuse them of teaching a

bastardized version of ashtanga, all I can say is that each

and every time I take a class I greatly enjoy the

experience. Its done amazing things for me, both physically

and mentally and isn’t that what it should all be

about?
