Guest guest
During times when astanga is questionable in pregnancy, how about women doing the poses in a different way? I was helped in pregnancy by doing forward bends on bolsters, holding each pose for a long time (5-10 minutes). Supta virasana can be modified on bolsters, and is safe in pregnancy. Standing poses done in a supported way, like against the wall in the middle and late trimesters, but some might think are too intense for the first trimester, and possibly dangerous for some pregnant women during that time. Those who are used to inversions can continue them in pregnancy. I would consider doing shoulderstand on blankets to protect the neck. The neck might not be as warmed up as it gets in astanga practice. I found that for myself and my clients when I was a homebirth midwife, gentle yoga goes very far in pregnancy. Pregnancy is a meditative state, and doing easy poses, supported over bolsters as in forward bend practice, can be very healing. The effects are surprisingly powerful.
