Guest guest
I have heard from female Ashtanga Yoga practitioners that Ashtanga Yoga can be safely practiced during the first trimester of pregnancy-- with the omissions and modifications mentioned in the books by Lino Miele and John Scott--if there is no jumping in the vinyasas. However, Guruji recently told me that a woman should NOT practice Ashtanga Yoga during the first 3 months of pregnancy if she has had problems with a previous pregnancy (miscarriage). In addition to taking the literal instructions seriously, my personal interpretation of his advice is that every woman's constitution is different, and it's hard to know what kind of movement can jar the uterus enough to cause detachment of the placenta. Perhaps in seasoned female practitioners, the bandhas can be so strong that they interfere with the enlargement of the uterus during the first trimester. Thus, these women should make a conscious effort to allow the belly to "hang loose" during this time. Also, a woman should not practice yoga during the 10th through 14th weeks of pregnancy in order to allow the pregnancy to become firmly rooted. This suggestion came from a certified female Ashtanga Yoga teacher who had a healthy full-term pregnancy.
