Guest guest
Hello everyone, I have been practicing ashtanga yoga for a year now. My teachers are students of Danny Paradise, so I think that they are very good, but there is one problem. They just teach you the physical practice, and nothing theoretical beyond it. I think that there must me benefits beyond the physical stuff to practicing yoga regularly. The yoga probably should impact your veryday life and your behaviour. But, my teachers won't explain them to me. Therefore I ask you: what are the benefits of practicing ashtanga, except the physical part (being stronger and more flexible), and how can we see these benefits in the everyday life when practicing yoga? Thank You, Jinji
Guest guest
just curious...aside from the physical benefits of yoga haven't you also experienced some psychological and spiritual shifts? aren't we supposed to practice and all is coming?? ashtangayoga, "jinji15" <s_c@z...> wrote: > Hello everyone, > I have been practicing ashtanga yoga for a year now. Guest guest
I dont care what kind of flack i get for saying this but i will say it....... Often i feel the same way about ashtanga yoga that it is only a physical practice- teachers give the public what they want and most of them jsut want a physical work out. This is where you must take responsability for your own practice and knowlegege of yoga. I have read some really great books and i would like to share them with you Beyond Power Yoga Rodney Yee's new book is really good (i forget the name) The Tree of yoga by Iyengar Jivamukti Yoga by Sharon Ganon and David Life moving into stillness by eric shiffman and of course gita, the sutras, and other classical indian scriptures much love to you in streching your body as well as your heart mind and soul Chris
Guest guest
how is it that you've read the jivamukti book if it hasn't been released yet? just curious...did you get an advance copy? i think so much depends on the teacher. i agree that most ashtanga and any other style of yoga is totally taught from the physical point of view with no emphasis on spirituality. if you really want to experience the spiritual aspects of yoga you really have to find a teacher who is in touch with it. i know jivamukti has received a lot of criticism from this board (i don't really understand why when there are so many real charlatans and loser out there) but you do learn about spirituality there. i'm sure you'd also find it at eddie stern's. just my thoughts. ashtangayoga, "yogaboi" <yogaboi> wrote: > I dont care what kind of flack i get for saying this but i will say > it....... > > Often i feel the same way about ashtanga yoga that it is only a > physical practice- teachers give the public what they want and most > of them jsut want a physical work out. Guest guest
i also think there aren't many really great spiritually-based yoga teachers out there. so if you do find one you are very very lucky. count your blessings.
Guest guest
First let me say HELLO to the group. My name is Gregory. Now to this question. Ashtanga means the EIGHT LIMBS OF YOGA. Practicing Ashtanga may bring one to a wholeness with everything and everyone around. The 8 limbs are: Restraint or Abstinence (yama), Observance or Disciplines (niyama), Yogic Postures (asanas), Breath Control (pranayama), Retraction of the Senses (pratayara), Fixation of Attention (dharana), Devotion and Fusive Apprehension (dhyana), and Fully Intergrated Consciousness (samadhi). Yoga is a way for people to achieve complete balance within themselves and their environment. I believe that the much of the yoga taught in the gyms and studios are geared to giving the people the flavor of the month in fitness. You get more flexible and stronger so you can look cute in a pair of shorts at the beach. But each person must take responsibility to truly study the histories and evolutions of things. Then they can decide if it is for them. Personally I incorporate yoga into my spiritual beliefs of a christ essence in each person. I incorporate the limbs into my life through meditation, prayer, conversation with others, and readings. I hope this answers your question.
