In talking with a physical therapist and showing her various asanas,

she commented that in upward dog, if one relaxes the gluteus muscles,

this will in turn relax the erector spinae (lower back) muscles which

will allow the spine to curve back more.

I've never had an ashtanga instructor say anything about relaxing or

constricting the gluts. Is relaxing them the way to go? It felt

good to me.

relaxing the gluteus muscles (muscles in your butt) might help

the erector spinae relax, but usually it is the stuff in front of the

spine--psoas and other muscles on front to the abdomen and

pelvis--that inhibit a backbend, not the back muscles

themselves. For my body, I like to keep the glutes ever so gently

engaged--it helps the backbend start at the hips instead of the

lower spine. But perhaps if your front can lengthen easily, you

don't have to counter it with effort in the back...

** The Gluteus maximus muscle is the buttocks. It is employed while

lunging, stooping, leg raising, bending forward & stretching.
