About YOGA VASISHTHA

The Vasishtha's Yoga is a unique work of Indian Philosophy. It is an

unusual scripture in that it purports to record the words of a human

(Vasishtha) while he is expounding universal truths to God (Rama).

The work is presented as dialogue between Rama and the sage Vasishtha

which spans over 18-days. The kavya is a long philosophic poem which

uses nested dialogues to narrate nearly 50 scattered stories -- about

dreams, super humans or reincarnations -- always with the objective

of conveying a definite, forceful message. Yoga Vasishtha is a

favorite of spiritual seekers in India from several centuries. The

viewpoint embraced by Vasishtha's Yoga teaches that Consciousness

alone exists and that the universe is nothing but the self-expression

of this Consciousness. It contains true understanding about the

creation of the world. The Yoga Vasishtha is notable for its

unequivocal rejection of fate, emphasis

enthusiastic endorsement of participation in worldly affairs (nothing

could be more reprehensible than retiring to the forest), rational

worldview, liberal view of gender, caste or nation. The YOGA

VASISHTHA gives wonderful insight into the deeper meaning of Siva and

Shakti. This book is also known as the Maharamayana.

In this scripture there is nothing new; but the truth has been

presented in a pleasant fashion with a number of stories. It is the

truth that is proclaimed in this scripture that is important; not the

one who has declared the truth or composed the scripture.

 

By a mere study of this scripture ... ignorance is dispelled. The

beauty of this scripture is that its student is not abandoned to his

despair; if something is not clear in the first instance, a further

study of the scripture makes it clear. This scripture dispels

delusion and enables you to realize that the ordinary life itself is

the supreme state.

 

Therefore, one should study at least a small part of the scripture

daily. If, however, one thinks it is not authoritative because it is

of human origin, one can resort to the study of any other scripture

dealing with self-knowledge and final liberation. But one should not

waste one's lifetime.

 

In the contemporary world where psychosomatic diseases are increasing

and `stress' is the norm of the day, Yoga Vasishtha has a new

relevance.

** The /Vasishtha Maha Ramayan/ is indeed a remarkable work! I

suggest this book to all serious students of Yoga. It is a wealth of

knowledge & practical spiritual instruction, especially for those who

have become dis-enchanted with the world & their lives. Equally with

those who are scientificaly-minded, or enjoy works on ethics,

morality &/or psychology & theology.

 

It is not difficult to read & each time I re-read it, I find 'new' &

significant passages. It is a book of direction .. from jiva to para.
