Guest guest
Dear friends, I am very new to Ashtanga, my fascination mostly started with observing friends doing it. I have recently purchased a few books and tapes on the subject and started to practise by myself but I do now understand the importance of a qualified teacher's guidance. Unfortunately most of the yoga studio's price range here in lower New York is way out of my reach (menial job combined with overwhelming school tuition, need I say more). I do live very close to Patanjali, Jivamukti and the Siva Shala but I know I can't afford going there. I would be grateful for any advice how to safely do ashtanga on a budget. Thanks! -- ________ Sign-up for your own FREE Personalized E-mail at Mail.com http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup
Guest guest
maybe you should check into doing some karma yoga. go to different studios and see if you can work the front desk a few hours/week in exchange for classes...i'd also ask if they'd give you a student rate. ashtangayoga, "Ursula Pereira" <fetchdog@n...> wrote: > Dear friends, > I am very new to Ashtanga, my fascination mostly started with observing friends doing it. Guest guest
I agree, try to do some volunteer work somewhere if you can. If not, go to a class a week, if that is what you can afford. Then practice on your own. Once is better than none. This will help keep your practice on track. I am not sure that you can do once a week at Patanjali, but you should be able to do this at some other places. ashtangayoga, "Ursula Pereira" <fetchdog@n...> wrote: > Dear friends, > I am very new to Ashtanga, my fascination mostly started with observing friends doing it. Guest guest
i think you said you were in NYC. Yoga shala, a great new place, that is directed by former jivamukti teachers who now do ashtanga has a community class once a week. it's $5 for people who can't afford full price. i strongly believe it is necessary to be in a classroom situation with a teacher to practice. you become more disciplined, you learn more, you're inspired more and you pick up on all that positive group energy. i take my hat off to people who can practice alone at home but i am still a work in progress and need the help of my fellow humans. go to their website at: http://www.theshala.com. ashtangayoga, clk0893 <no_reply> wrote: > maybe you should check into doing some karma yoga. go to different > studios and see if you can work the front desk a few hours/week in > exchange for classes...i'd also ask if they'd give you a student rate. > > ashtangayoga, "Ursula Pereira" <fetchdog@n...> wrote: > > Dear friends, > > I am very new to Ashtanga, my fascination mostly started with > observing friends doing it. Guest guest
no they do not teach ashtanga. but i took a class there last night and the teacher pretty much led us thru the primary series. if you can't afford an ashtanga studio right now it is a good substitute. ashtangayoga, backbayyoga <no_reply> wrote: > is the yoga shala ashtanga yoga? they have NO mention of Ashtanga > yoga on the website. > > ashtangayoga, clk0893 <no_reply> wrote: > > i think you said you were in NYC. Guest guest
I always though the asanas (including primary series) are one of the 8 limbs of ashtanga yoga. ashtangayoga, backbayyoga <no_reply> wrote: > ok. well....you might want to mention that it is not ashtanga as this > is an ashtanga group site. just a thought. pretty much primary series > is not ashtanga. > > ashtangayoga, clk0893 <no_reply> wrote: > > no they do not teach ashtanga. but i took a class there last night > > and the teacher pretty much led us thru the primary series. if you > > can't afford an ashtanga studio right now it is a good substitute. > > > > ashtangayoga, backbayyoga <no_reply> wrote: > > > is the yoga shala ashtanga yoga? they have NO mention of Ashtanga > > > yoga on the website. > > > > > > ashtangayoga, clk0893 <no_reply> wrote: > > > > i think you said you were in NYC.
