Guest guest
i have a very regular (daily) ashtanga yoga practice and i've been doing it for about a year. my instructor is david williams, a very experienced and gentle teacher. when i first became pregnant, i spoke to him about it and, although he doesn't recommend beginning a new ashtanga practice during pregnancy, he felt that because i had already been studying i could continue to practice throughout my pregnancy if i eliminated about 6 postures (inversions, balancing, etc). he also encouraged me to listen to my body and to lay off if i felt uncomfortable in any way. anyway, i have had no problems thus far, but i am in my second trimester and some of my friends and family are starting to question my actions (out of concern for me i realize, although it is a bit annoying!). then i had a discussion with a local midwife who told me that she thinks yoga can cause problems in terms with the umbillical cord getting wrapped around the baby. that made me worry, so i wanted to get some other 'expert' opinions. i would really, really, REALLY be bummed out if i had to give up my practice since its THE ONLY THING KEEPING ME SANE... but of course I WILL if i am potentially causing injury to my baby or increasing the chances of a problem delivery. any one been through this or know anything about it? any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated. -jennifer funkinatrix
Guest guest
I have seen some very pregnant women practice Ashtanga. Kathy McNames of Yoga Vermont is one of them. Also, look at the Ashtanga Yoga Montreal website. There are pics with a woman 9 months preganant doing handstand or something like that. I also had a woman in my month long teacher training who was 5 months pregnant. I think that it is ultimatley up to you as far as what you can do. I would talk to a Doctor (MD) too. ashtangayoga, "funkinatrix" <funkinatrix> wrote: > i have a very regular (daily) ashtanga yoga practice and i've been > doing it for about a year. my instructor is david williams, a very > experienced and gentle teacher. when i first became pregnant, i spoke > to him about it and, although he doesn't recommend beginning a new > ashtanga practice during pregnancy, he felt that because i had > already been studying i could continue to practice throughout my > pregnancy if i eliminated about 6 postures (inversions, balancing, > etc). he also encouraged me to listen to my body and to lay off if i > felt uncomfortable in any way. > > anyway, i have had no problems thus far, but i am in my second > trimester and some of my friends and family are starting to question > my actions (out of concern for me i realize, although it is a bit > annoying!). then i had a discussion with a local midwife who told me > that she thinks yoga can cause problems in terms with the umbillical > cord getting wrapped around the baby. that made me worry, so i wanted > to get some other 'expert' opinions. i would really, really, REALLY > be bummed out if i had to give up my practice since its THE ONLY > THING KEEPING ME SANE... but of course I WILL if i am potentially > causing injury to my baby or increasing the chances of a problem > delivery. > > any one been through this or know anything about it? any advice you > could offer would be greatly appreciated. > > -jennifer > funkinatrix

Guest guest
I too have heard of pregnant women with an established practice continuing right through to the end. If you feel its too much, don't do it. I would be wary of consuling a regular doctor on the matter, though. Unless they understand yoga, they are likely to advise against it. When I had my hip replaced I was told not to do yoga. I ignored the advice and my hip is fine, stronger and more flexible for sure than others who had theirs replaced at the same time. However there is a risk of dislocation, I know that. Same with pregnancy. Good luck! ashtangayoga, backbayyoga <no_reply> wrote: > I have seen some very pregnant women practice Ashtanga.
