Yes, you can hurt your knees a lot if you are not open in the hips.

Take is slow. Bad knees are hard to fix.

I know some people that got hurt doing these asanas. I personally

feel a little pain in my right knee after practice. What can I do?

practise sitting on the floor with your knees out to the sides and

the soles of your feet together, dont force your knees down but feel

the movement from your hips, sit like this as often as you can,try

not to use chairs as often as you would, it really helps to open up

the hips and makes half/full lotus much easier to achieve.

The last thing you want to do is force yourself into padmasana.

Apart from the possibility of doing yourself an injury it is against

the spirit of the practice. As others have said the opening has to

come from the hips. Send me an email and I will email you back a

document on how to prepare for padmasana.

Cheers

This is how you prepare for Padmasana:

Practice 6 days a week.

I do... that is how I got my knees bad in the first place.. :) Could

somebody give a few pointers how to make my hips more "loose" so

that I would not stress my knees to much.

Or should I just avoid the padmasana, until my knees recover and let

the yoga loose my hips eventually.

Hi...Ask any orthopedic surgeon - the knee joint is not supposed to

rotate. If you can practice it without pain, go for it. Perhaps you

have more natural ability than the next guy. If you are like me, it

may take you years, or it may never happen. Don't push it, unless

you want to be like alot of "experienced" (older?) teachers, who have

to go in frequently for steroid shots into their knees... When God

designed the knee, s/he must have been smokin' too many tea leaves!

To put a joint that isn't supposed to rotate in between the hip and

ankle, is nuts! ...for us yogi's, anyway! ;) S
