Dorene-

As an avid runner, I too, found that the running was missing something. I

definetly found that through the Ashtanga. I have been fortunate to have

worked with a great teacher and also to have worked with David Williams,

Nancy Gilgoff and P. Jois, last year. Ashtanga is a wonderful practice, and

it is hard to do. I give everyone so much credit who is attempting to learn

and practice this yoga without the benefit of a teacher. My teacher, Greg,

has always taught us that getting the asana perfect is not the goal, it is

the breathing and then all else will come. I do recommend that even if you

can only get to a teacher once a month then go because it is important that

you do the asanas correctly (not perfectly) so that you will not cause

injury to yourself.

I have never been able to get back to the running as I had before and so now

I too, walk alot and I miss that part of my workout, but the benefits from

the Ashtanga so outway the running benefits. I find that when I am

practicing faithfully I never get sick and then you can count on it, that

when I stop within a month, I have some viral thing going on. And, as

quickly as the anxiety leaves from faithful practice, it returns just as

quickly without it.

Regardless of how you do the practice, who teaches it, who is certified or

not, it is great and if everyone did it, this world would be such a better

place to live in.

For all those who have heard me mention that my son is in the US Navy now

and just returned from the Afghanistan area after 7 months, I want you to

all know that he has asked about Ashtanga yoga. It seems he was telling

his shipmates how much I love it and "how different I am" from doing it and

his morale officer thought it might be something that they should train our

service men to do. Picture that guys, the US Navy doing Ashtanga!

Have a great day.

Oh YES ! The US Navy doing Ashtanga .. now there's a thought!

This bulking-up thing is obviously 'normal' - It's happened to me

too. I have to buy t-shirts and tops a size larger because of my

shoulders and arms, but it is quite 'solid'. I wonder if a higher

protein diet might help? A bit more protein and a bit less rice?

The strange thing is that some women get thinner, and I'm sure

you've also seen those stick-thin women who are REALLY strong. I

supose their muscles have less to do, in a way. Perhaps it is a

spiral: the more bulk you build up, the more strength and muscle

you need to lift it, hence more bulk etc.

There is absolutely no doubt that a daily practice of any sort,

however short, is beneficial. Even if you don't appear to make

progress in asanas, your breath and joint-opening will improve as a

result. It's what Guruji tells us to do, and all the great

teachers, and they are right. For me, once I've done a practice, it

doesn't matter what the day throws at me, it will be alright and I

can cope!

Namaste everyone.
