Guest guest
NOTICEBOARD of YOGA COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS and NEWSLETTER with the compliments of PURPLE VALLEY YOGA CENTRE, ANJUNA, GOA (www.yogagoa.com) where Ashtanga yoga enthusiasts and friends gather to practise, learn, teach, chat and relax when in India. NEWSLETTER: 1. Hullo again from tropical Goa, where the 24-hour weather guide for each day in The Herald newspaper says, ‘Maximum 32, Minimum 22, sunny and dry’ - and it predicts the same day after day. We vaguely hear of political agitation, bad weather, and social discontent in other parts of the world, but here the people are friendly and smiling, and there is no bad news beyond the local chai shop selling out of idli. Having bad mobile (cellphone) service is annoying, but some people seem to get a service on the beach. For most of us, however, mobiles ring rarely and more usually they only have one or two bars service. Still, we survive. 2. As the season unfolds Purple Valley is getting busier, although the depression in the travel industry and the global low confidence in travel safety is definitely noticeable. Still, we have Americans, French, Swiss, German, Italian, Scandinavians, South Africans, Australians, Chinese and Brit ashtangis here, so we are quite an interestingly multi-national community, Once here, the sentiment is always the same: ‘But its so safe in Goa, why are there not more people here? but its great that there aren’t!’ 3. Anyone interested in ‘Ashtanga for the over 50’s’, Purple Valley’s Workshop in March 2003 with Gwendoline Hunt, can now email annie for the flyer – sorry, we are having trouble getting it onto the site, but it can be emailed without difficulty as an attachment. 4. We are also looking for a new webmaster – if anyone out there runs a professional, competent web management service please email annie with an outline of your charges and references. 5. We have replaced our 6.30pm Mysore style class with a new session on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays which we are loosely calling ‘Yoga Plus’ – it is a session which merges asana work with pranayama and meditation, and is designed to complement and deepen your regular Ashtanga practice. Ashtangis who come to Goa now have the opportunity to attend two yoga classes a day without excessively tiring themselves, and to significantly develop their practice. NOTICEBOARD 1 The Yoga Shop has an online newsletter which gives a special discount to e-rs on its mats, clothing, books and other yoga paraphernalia. In spring 2003 Manju Jois is giving an intensive Teacher Training in the unadulterated Ashtanga tradition that his father passed on to him. Manju is one of very very few people that learned directly from Guru G while Guru G was still a young man. Manju and his dad first came to the west to teach Ashtanga Yoga almost 30 tears ago. Although change is good, Manju has recently made an ambitious decision to "clean-up" the name of Ashtanga Yoga. The most important thing besides the obvious learning of asanas in it's original tradition, (as Krishnamacharya taught Guru G), Manju teaches us pranayama and vedic chanting. If the student is ready he might impart more esoteric teachings. Ashtanga Yoga is an authentic path toward enlightenment.
