Guest guest
when you experience severe pain and stiffness you have strained the muscles and you need to rest them a bit. Start off with icepacks 10 min on 10 min off for a few hours. Also, take some advil to help with inflammation. The second day use a heat pad. But, the most important thing is to rest for a few days and then when you are ready to start again to go slowly and breathe deeply and slowly. You will be fine if you don't rush things and strain more. Guest guest
However, barring serious injury, and experienced Ashtanga teacher would have told you that it is better to keep practicing even if it is only Surya A and B. It is better to use it some so it doesn't heal tighter than it already was. You may find this is a recurring problem that results from tight hamstrings. FBL ps to all it applies to - Please stop giving advice if you don't know what you are talking about. ashtanga yoga, efriedlander2002 < no_reply> wrote: > thanks > > ashtanga yoga, "Gearhart, Margee" > <mgearhart@s...> wrote: > > when you experience severe pain and stiffness you have > strained the muscles and you need to rest them a bit. Guest guest
fbl- I do know what i am talking about and I received this advice from an orthopaedist who has been practicing for 15 years now and also does Ashtanga. I think that unless you are a physician yourself, you should make sure the advice you give is correct. Just because someone teaches Ashtanga, does not make him always correct. margee > > funkybadlady [sMTP:no_reply] > Friday, December 27, 2002 12:50 AM > ashtanga yoga > Re: ashtanga yoga Lower Back Injury > > However, barring serious injury, and experienced Ashtanga > teacher would have told you that it is better to keep practicing > even if it is only Surya A and B. Guest guest
Margee, you are way, way too much of a beginner to be giving out advice like that and so is your doctor if he just started doing Ashtanga. Maybe he will learn a few new things himself in the process. A lot of people get backpain and panic. I don't care what a doctor told you, like I said, barring serious injury, practicing even a little is ALWAYS better. Guest guest
fbl- The person who wrote in wasn't talking about just slight backpain. I do believe they referred to severe backpain. Anytime anyone has "severe backpain," it should be treated as an injury and checked out by a physician. I have worked in the medical field long enough to know that and I think I would take the advice of one of the leading sports orthopaedists in the NYC area. The beauty of life is that we are all entitled to our opinions and I think on this one I will defer to the physician. Although, I do agree that there are times that we do need to practice, even just a bit when we are sore. I've been practicing for over two years so I don't think that I am just a "beginner." Happy New year. Guest guest
Hey fbl, let's not forget our manners. Your confrontational opinionated remarks are not appreciated by me at least. If you can't keep it civil and respectful, go away. I'm sorry a yoga board has to degenerate into this kind of petiness-that's not right. This is a board to share opinions and experiences, lets remember. I have appreciated Margee's thoughful remarks in past, and would hate for your remarks to stifle her well intentioned efforts to contribute in the future. And please, spare me a response, I'm not interested. Cheers, Lawrence. --- "Gearhart, Margee" <mgearhart wrote: > fbl- > The person who wrote in wasn't talking about just > slight backpain. Guest guest
Thank you Lawrence, I appreciate the compliment. I do try not to give advice when it comes to physical aspects unless I first inquire. I feel that working for the last 15 years here with all the physicians I have at hand and running a residency program for 21 physicians gives me access to medical information that is based on knowledge, not just heresay. FBL may be right though about the experience. Two years really isn't long and especially since I still can't sit lotus without help. Happy New Year to you and best wishes for a wonderful 2003. Guest guest
You are right, Margee seems very sweet. But you need to get over yourself. Why is a yoga board any different from any other place in the world? You must have very high standards for yourself and other people. By the way, one practice a day is enough, as if you needed someone to tell you. Spend the extra time doing something nice to help other people. Too many high and mighty yoga students are wrapped up in themselves to the painful point of tedium. Don't become a victim of your own personality like so many others who have come and gone here... Oh, yeah, "let's" - and a word of advice - don't read my posts. FBL ashtanga yoga, lawrence romanosky < lromanosky> wrote: > Hey fbl, let's not forget our manners.
