Guest guest
Hi Lawrence, Were you doing the closing sequence and then doing the second primary series? I don't think you should. I can't find my copy of Jois' Yoga Mala, but in it he says something to the effect that you should not do any asanas after you have done the finishing sequence. I think he meant any asanas until the next days practice. In the early days in Mysore there are lots of stories of people doing multiple series in a day, several primary or primary then secondary, etc.. I can only assume that they went from primary back to the beginning or on to the next one, without doing the Finishing sequence, Surya Namaskara or even the standing series. One thing we should keep in mind is that the primary series is what comes after the Standing Series, it does not include the Standing Series. So, basically, I think your idea of continuing on to Intermediate Series directly from Primary Series is sound. If it were me I would do Surya Namaskara A and B, the Standing Sequence, the Primary Series and then go from Setu Bhandhasana in the Primary to Pashasana in the Intermediate, do as much of that series as is appropriate and then do finishing. Do be careful. Don't do more than you should, especially if you have injured yourself. Remember what Swenson says. 'What is appropriate one day may not be the next.' We do the asanas in the moment only, yesterday and tomorrow have no part in what we do now in our practice. Listen to your body, focus on the breath, keep the bhandas and leave the ego off the mat. Love and Blessing, Ed Ps. I am relatively new to Ashtanga. I am not tempted to do two series in a day, I don't always do the full Primary Series every day for that matter. I am just now starting to do the Intermediate Series. I am happy about that because there are a lot of old friends among the asanas in the Intermediate Series. Guest guest
Hi, Thanks for the comment. I think you are right about not doing two separate practices back to back. I always seemed very tight after closing in one practice, then starting another. I did it that way becuase I liked the classes, but didn't find them long enough (they were ususally trunkated primary series, 1 1/4 hours). I'll start throwing in a "Mysore" class, which is a 3hour open class, which gives me lots of time to exhaust myself. Because of my shoulder I've only done some very light practictics in the past month, mostly Hatha. But now I think I can push in Ashtanga again. It seems what happened is that I had a muscle injury and it healed with scar tissue, leaving me with a bit of a strange bump. I understand that I have to have it worked out with deep tissue massage, which is apparantly painful, Yikes! I'm glad to be confident to do Ashtanga again, and was very pleased to have booked a spot for a Fiona Stang workshop coming to Calgary late this month.
