Guest guest
NOTICEBOARD of YOGA COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS and NEWSLETTER with the compliments of PURPLE VALLEY YOGA CENTRE, ANJUNA, GOA (www.yogagoa.com) where Ashtanga yoga enthusiasts and friends gather to practise, learn, teach, chat and relax. NEWSLETTER from Purple Valley 1. The new PURPLE VALLEY RETREAT is coming along nicely, with walls going up for the accommodation and the new 40-mat shala. The Retreat is 3kms away from the original Purple Valley drop-in centre, and when the Retreat opens in December, the drop-in centre will continue to operate as it does now, with Mysore style and led drop-in classes six days each week. The ground is being landscaped to take the monsoon season into account ¡V there will be bridges over waterways which will flood during the summer months, but leave attractive gulleys in the dry winters. We have a big planting programme of new palms and vines, together with bougainvillea and other tropical flowering plants, which will all go in just before the monsoons start. The location is quieter than the first centre, and perfect for a tropical retreat. 2. The programme of Workshops for the 2003/04 season is also beginning to fill out. We already have a couple of big names coming, and several other slots are earmarked for some very interesting teachers. Email our Programmes Director, Denise Martin-Harker, at denise to be sent the Programme when it is finalized. 3. The new Students Gallery page on the web site is finally working, thanks to Beth Wade. DCYOGA dcyoga NOTICEBOARD 25 If, as the Yoga Sutras tell us, "practice", or abhyasa means "effort toward steadiness of mind", than there was plenty of "practice" going on the weekend after Christmas when Beryl Bender Birch, internationally renowned author and yoga teacher, focused her attention on the here and now and beat out 11 other mushers and their dog teams to take first place in the 4-dog Sportsman Class at the first New England Sled Dog race of the season in Meacham Lake, New York. The race was hosted by the Meacham Lake Inn in Adirondack Park, just north of Saranac Lake and 18 miles from the Canadian border and drew 140 dog teams from as far away and Ohio and Pennsylvania and Canada and Maine. Birch, author of the best-selling yoga books Power Yoga and Beyond Power Yoga traveled 465 miles from East Hampton, New York to compete for the blue ribbon. Birch competes in the "sportsman class" (as opposed to the 6 and 8 and open dog "pro" classes)and began racing two years ago after adopting several ! "retired" racing dogs. "They are gorgeous dogs," says Birch. "They might have been too old to race any longer on a pro team, but they were still fit at ages 7, 8, 9 and wanted to run and needed the exercise. After I realized that I just wasn't fast enough and didn't run enough miles on foot to keep them happy, I started looking around for some sort of "conveyance" that they could pull, that I could sort of, you know, ride in. Why re-invent the wheel? The sled is what they know. Learning to ride a sled for me and aspiring to be as fit as my dogs was the natural evolution of things." In the latter sense, the term kumbhaka refers to the fact that during the suspension of the breath the trunk of the body is filled with life energy (prana), which is retained as a pot (kumbha) retains liquid. The word means benevolent; paradoxically, Shiva is generally conceived as the destroyer of the universe. From a spiritual perspective, however, his destructive power is the essential process of breaking down (deconditioning) the ego personality so it becomes pervious to the divine light. In countless myths, Shiva emerges as the god of yogins par excellence. He combines within himself the possibilities of both fierce asceticism and orgiastic excess. NOTICEBOARD 35 PHILLIP MOFFITT ON FEAR "In your life, again and again, there is a knife at your throat. It may be a bad relationship, a serious illness, fear for your child, a desperate need for financial security, loneliness, aging, or fear of death. It may be fixation on achievement or a need for recognition or approval. Sometimes you are aware it is there; other times you block it out of your mind. Always it shapes your behavior, for you do not wish to be cut. The immediate threat of the knife cutting you is so distracting and confusing to your mind that you do not have the clarity...This fear and wanting lead to bad decisions, to loss of energy, and they thwart finding peace in life. To your nervous system, an emotional knife at the throat is just as devastating as a physical knife." The Knife's Edge: http://www.yogajournal.com/wisdom/534_1.cfm SOCIAL GRACE The spirit of yoga reinforces the sense of positive regard needed to work through fear of judgment or rejection. http://www.yogajournal.com/health/78_1.cfm NOTICEBOARD 36 For hints and tips on overcoming fear in handstand go to: www.yogajournal.com/practice/662_1.cfm Let gravity work for you. I measure my practice by my life, and how much peace, compassion, courage, and creativity I can access." http://www.yogajournal.com/views/369_1.cfm NOTICEBOARD 38 What the principles of yoga teach us about dealing with fear and uncertainty in an age of global terrorism. http://www.yogajournal.com/views/681_1.cfm NOTICEBOARD 39 MORE SANSKRIT TRIVIA: In yoga, SAMSKARA stands for the indelible imprints in the subconscious left behind by our daily experiences, whether conscious or unconscious, internal or external, desirable or undesirable. The term samskara suggests that these imprints are not merely passive vestiges of a person's actions and volitions but highly dynamic forces in his or her psychic life. They constantly propel consciousness into action. NOTICEBOARD 40 Opportunity for a massage therapist to move to Goa, India (beautiful!) and work with a physician in a medical center.
