ashtanga yoga help needed

Hi Maureen, Yes, Goa is very beautiful, with lovely beaches and

very friendly local people. It sure makes a change from the rest of

India - the Portuguese heritage certainly shows. It also has the

wonderful benefit of a blissful tropical climate when Europe and

North America are in the deepest grip of winter.

As for my hamstrings, thanks for the tip, but I already do lots of

downdogs as part of my practice, of course, and my teacher very

helpfully comes every day and 'stands' on my heels to help stretch

them. Any improvement is hard to spot! After 3 years ashtanga, my

heels are still about 2 inches above the floor in downdog, although

my pelvic tilt and angle of the lower back are much improved.

Actually, the best exercise was shown to me yesterday, which is

lying on your back on the floor, and putting a cloth or strap around

y your instep and trying the straighten your leg. You can feel it

in your hamstrings, and apparently if I do *that* every day it

*will* make a difference!

Best regards, Annie www.yogagoa.com

I love this!

Hi Annie,

Glucosamine Sulphate????? How can you recommend these pills that haven't passed

any scientific studies - even on your own anecdotal evidence.

Have you ever popped the bubbles in the plastic used as packing material? That

is what this stuff does to your muscles at a cellelur level. Do you work fior a

pharmaceutical company?

Why does everyone want a magic pill? What about a yogic diet - you are what you

eat - so what about fresh organic foods, close to the sun's energy? -

Ahimsa includes not harming your own body...Yoga is not about abusing your body

= not about how far you can stretch- not about how tight your hamstrings are....

(Or is it?)

I have just come off a 9-month plateau and am finally making a few

improvements - for the past 9 months my practice was stagnating or

going backwards. I think it happens. The difficult thing is to

persevere through it all.

But your list of complaints sounds as though your body is really

saying its had enough. Joints do wear out. Ligaments etc will only

stretch so far.

Can you do a practice within the new limits set by your body? If

you listen to it, don't push it, be content with what you can do,

surely that will give the hurting parts time to heal.

As for joint problems, I really recommend Glucosamine Sulphate. I

take about 1500 - 2000 mgs a day, and after about 2 months you

really notice a difference. It helps rebuild the joint linings.

Has anyone got any quick fixes for short hamstrings? (well, I

didn't think they were short, until I started ashtanga!)

Thank you for sharing this because although I liked parts of the email you are

responding to (eat organic foods and not relying on pills) it made me doubt my

efforts in the past to rebuild joint tissues with GS. Although I shouldn't doubt

it because it helped in conjunction with everything else I do to support the

body's health. But I definately noticed a difference with the addition of that

supplement. Thank you. Having read that email with part truth and part false

information makes me very aware to stay humble and only offer what I know or

have experienced.

around it and it can in some cases rebuild joint and cartilage tissues if taken

long enough and the damage isn't too severe. It is NOT a quick fix pill and is

appropriate for cases joint and cartilage degeneration and osteoarthritis

( the wear and tear kind). As for it putting air bubbles into your joints and

muscles, that is pure fiction. Wherever did you hear such a thing? As for my

with Richard Freeman since 1994.
