NOTICEBOARD of YOGA COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS and NEWSLETTER with the compliments

of PURPLE VALLEY YOGA CENTRE, ANJUNA, GOA (www.yogagoa.com) where Ashtanga yoga

enthusiasts and friends gather to practise, learn, teach, chat and relax.

NEWSLETTER

Hullo from sunny Goa, where every day is predictably lovely. This morning we had

a few clouds at dawn, but they soon burned off and now at mid-day it is

scorching hot – almost too hot to go to the beach. But there is plenty of shade

at the beaches, with the shacks and palm trees, so you don’t have to sit out and

roast. The evenings are easily warm for al fresco eating, and to think about

the cold and damp of Europe and North America.

Now the end of the second season at Purple Valley is in sight, with only 5 weeks

to go, we are getting a last flurry of students wanting to get a tropical break

and practice yoga with first class teachers. Many students have emailed saying

that they intend to come shortly to stay until the end of the season, and we

look forward to seeing you here. We can still arrange Package Deals for those

who want someone else to organise all the accommodation and airport transfer

details. (info on the site www.yogagoa.com)

Others have emailed to say that they would be here if it were not for the

current atmosphere of global instability, and look forward to coming next season

by which time hopefully the situation will have moved forward towards peace. At

least, here in Goa, the build-up in the Middle East seems so far away – in

reality, we are about as far from Baghdad as France is, but it seems much, much

further!

Goa is so shanti (peaceful] that we wish we could transport a packet of our

sunshine and laid back life style to all of you so far away.

We have plenty of entries for the Noticeboard this issue, but before we move

straight into the list here is a quote from the Dhammapada:

‘Just as a creeper can entangle a tree, so evil can entangle your soul. Just as

a creeper can eventually pull a tree to the ground, so evil will pull your soul

down to oblivion. Only your enemies will rejoice. It is easy to do wrong: it is

easy to betray your beliefs. It is hard to do right: it is hard to remain

faithful to your beliefs. By doing wrong to others, you do wrong to yourself; by

doing good to others, you do good to yourself. You alone can choose whether to

do good or evil, whether to uplift or demean yourself. No-one can make this

choice for you. There are times when performing an evil act can seem righteous –

because someone begs you to perform it, or because you know it may lead to a

greater good. Do not endanger your soul in this way. Only performs actions of

which your soul approves.’ The Dhammapada is the most famous part of the Pali

Canon, a Buddhist text. It is a collection of aphorisms which are said to come

from Buddha himself; together they form a !

summary of the Buddha’s moral and spiritual philosophy. The collection was made

at the first Council of Buddhist monks, which convened within weeks of his

death.:

Standing Forward Bend can help a distracted mind unwind. For advice on how to

achieve it, go to http://yogajournal.com/poses/477_1.cfm?ctsrc=nlv37

"Forward bends teach patience. It takes a long time to enter them deeply.

Enlightenment does not necessarily occur when the head reaches the legs, so

there is no need to get it there soon, if ever." Says Roger Cole. For more

advice go to http://yogajournal/practice/599_1.cfm?ctsrc=nlv37

NOTICEBOARD 10

Cyndi Lee says, "Pushing, pulling, or any kind of aggression in yoga will only

backfire, creating more tension and possibly injury. So, my first recommendation

is to take a long view of your yoga practice. Over time your body will unfold.

If you maintain your level of curiosity rather than having a specific goal or

agenda, you will discover how everything changes all the time." For more details

and advice go to http://yogajournal/practice/713_1.cfm?ctsrc=nlv37

NOTICEBOARD 11

Make sure your yoga practice is helping, not hurting, your back. Lots of advice

on taking care of your back at http://yogajournal/health/125_1.cfm?ctsrc=nlv37

NOTICEBOARD 12

If your hips are tight and you're having difficulty with forward bends, don't

assume it's your hamstrings. Inflexible rotator muscles may be to blame. Details

NOTICEBOARD 13

Science can teach us a lot about flexibility. In recent years, biomedical

research has begun to investigate and appreciate what yogis have known for

centuries: Stretching keeps us limber, youthful, and healthy. Look at

NOTICEBOARD 15

Phillip Moffitt says, "Are you lost in doubt? Reactive doubt arises from causes

and conditions. It may be from disappointment, uncertainty, an experience of

failure, or an old belief about yourself. What matters is that you realize it is

impersonal: You are not that doubt; it is not you. It is simply a mental state

that has arisen because the right conditions were present, just as a rainstorm

is created when the proper elements are present. When the causes abate, both

doubt and the rainstorm dissipate on their own. Therefore it is helpful to

understand the causes and conditions, to see them clearly, and to treat yourself

kindly while they are present." More at

http://yogajournal.com/wisdom/791_1.cfm?ctsrc=nlv37

NOTICEBOARD 16

Thinking about whether a Retreat is for you? Yoga teacher Sarah Powers

emphasizes how going on retreat can challenge doubt and other constructs of the

mind that arise in daily life: "Retreats offer a theatre in which our lives

become the backdrop and our misidentification with the ego-self takes center

stage. Sages have long spoken about an unchanging internal substratum of being,

the true Self that is naturally full of bliss and love. They remind us that

freedom is an inner alignment that neither comes into being nor dies, but is

simply evoked by our quiet, undistracted, sustained surrender to its inner

stream." More at http://yogajournal.com/wisdom/650_1.cfm?ctsrc=nlv37

Kashmir Shaivism (presentations in USA : Oct/Nov 2002) Inner bliss & harmony.

We are indeed grateful to the people of USA for their overwhelming response to

our presentations. Kashmir Shaivism is the best ambassador of India's spiritual

creed to rest of the world. This unique philosophy is very relevant for the

present. It can inspire us for both material and spiritual progress. It stresses

that we have to develop inner strength. Many times people fall pray to guilt and

self- condemnation or become hypocritical due to endless internal struggle urged

by lofty spiritual traditions and practices. Therefore, we have to overcome the

dogma of sin, fear and suppression. Based on "Agamas" (direct revelations of

God) : It is quick without any steps or succession or barriers. Indeed, it can

instantly transform and lead you to the inner blissful path and harmony. We had

presentations, devotional chant / mystical poetry and guided meditation based on

the subtle aspects of Trika Yoga. !

We are quite delighted with the continuous interaction and fascinating feedback

from the friends of this great country. In fact, we had a unique experience at

each place, like ‘Spanda’ or spiritual vibration. Indeed, it was everybody's

love and blessings that provided a great opportunity to have insight into Indian

mysticism, spiritual thrill and enchantment. Besides it was an endeavour for

human upliftment, world harmony and an easy path for self-realization.

You may already be aware of the loss of thousands of monasteries in Tibet over

the last forty years. However, less well known is the construction of a new

Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Scotland. This unique project aims to preserve the

rich cultural and spiritual tradition of Tibet and is dedicated to all those who

seek peace of mind. In the words of the Dalai Lama: ‘The centre will serve as

a culture centre not only for Buddhist believers and practitioners but also for

all those who take an interest in Buddhism and come to make comparative study

and exchange ideas. That will be very useful.’ In May 2003 Samye Ling Monastery

will be hosting the International Conference of the European network of Buddhist

Christian Studies. This major event brings together eminent scholars of both

faiths to exchange ideas and deepen their understanding. To facilitate this

event we are making an urgent appeal to complete the building project on time.

At the time of writing, a total of £5.85 !

million is needed. Individuals/ organisations who wish to make a substantial

donation may have a wing of the monastery named after them. Your donation will

help us to achieve the completion date and establish the first monastery of its

kind in the Western World, ensuring the preservation of Tibetan culture and

religion for the benefit of future generations. Thank you for your time and

consideration. Yours sincerely, Fundraiser's Committee Samye Ling

BB CAFE is offering an endorsed course in Goa called Meditative Dance – The

Dance of the Chakras. This dance workshop focuses on the chakras. According to

the Indian philosophy there are chakras along our spine, wheels of energy which

are also related to mental and emotional areas. When all chakras are in balance,

each chakra will be open, the physical body will perform optimally and an

uniformed organism will result. When body and mind are one, there is meditation.

Dance-expression is a contemporary form of dance, wherein the creative process

is paramount. It is not about a technique or about imitation of steps, but it is

exploration and improvisation in movement. You find out in which way you express

images, feelings, thoughts and music. You will dance on your own, in pairs or in

groups. The workshop will be directed by Jaap van Manen (1954, the Netherlands),

who studied theology and dance-expression. For more than 15 years he teaches

dance to children and adults in variou!

s settings. In 1996 he founded his own company, called MOBILE, being aware in

movement. From 1998 till 2001 he was co-founder and co-director of the VODD, a

private postgraduate school for becoming dance-expression teachers. For

To our community of yoga teachers, students and friends: Special Workshop with

Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama. March 19 & 20 We have all been graced with the

opportunity to study directly with the renowned Yogi, Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama. This

is a rare event as he lives in Tokyo, has health issues, does not travel much

now at 78, and rarely teaches outside his institute. Dr. Motoyama is an

unusually gifted and learned man who is difficult to categorize. His areas of

expertise span many disciplines. He is both a man of science and religion: a

Shinto priest [with] PhD's in philosophy and physiological psychology, a yogi,

computer specialist, researcher of oriental medicine, parapsychologist,

electrical engineer, spiritual healer and seer. He firmly believes that the

purpose of existence is the spiritual evolution of the individual.”

Rande Brown Ouchi “His interest in Yoga has been to achieve a state of

“superconsciousness” through the practice of Yoga meditation, while showing the

theoretical and practical procedures of how to actually achieve this state. He

has conducted life long research in acupuncture medicine with the fruitful

consequence of the invention of the AMI apparatus for the measurement of Qi

energy, the vital energy flowing in the human body. To our Knowledge, no one in

this field of human pursuit has attempted to approach the practice of this form

of meditation from such diverse fields of scholarship, much less to clearly

articulate from personal experience, the knowledge which these disciplines

offer.” We recommend you try and read one or more of his books before coming

Dear Friends, This is an important message from Deepak Chopra: We have

received hundreds of emails and telephone calls (both supportive and critical)

in response to an article that appeared in The Commercial Appeal (Memphis,

Tennessee). Thank you for sharing your feelings with us so passionately. To

have the freedom to express your beliefs is a great blessing. In this country,

we all have the right to speak our hearts truth, regardless of what that truth

is. Right or wrong was never mentioned in the Constitution. Whether you agree or

disagree on any subject, you have the right to speak out. Sadly, that is not

true everywhere in the world.

We understand your passion and your argument, and we would like to take a moment

to clarify our beliefs.

We believe, like you, that the world is in a crisis. We also believe, like you,

that a large part of the crisis would be solved if Saddam Hussein were no longer

in power in Iraq and Iraq was fully disarmed of weapons of mass destruction. We

recognize, like the rest of the world, that he has abused his power, his people,

and the trust of the international community. We strongly believe, like millions

of people around the world, that he should be removed from his position as the

Leader of that country.

We do not, however, believe that a war with Iraq is the only solution to the

problem. It may be the most obvious solution, but it is also the most costly

one. Costly in human suffering and costly in innocent human lives. Thousands

upon thousands of people will lose their lives if we are not willing to explore

every avenue for peaceful resolution. It is estimated that approximately 1.5

million Iraqi children may lose their lives if a war takes place.

What we are suggesting, to anyone willing to listen, is that this problem, like

every problem, has the potential to be solved through creative and peaceful

means. Please read the attached speeches from Senator Robert Byrd and

Congressman Dennis Kucinich and also, the article entitled, “Blood, Stats, and

Tears.”

Thomas Mann said “We are most likely to get angry and excited in our opposition

to some idea when we ourselves are not quite certain of our own position and are

inwardly tempted to take the other side.”

part of March, so please don’t send info on any events before, say, the 20th of
