Guest guest
I am starting a "Mysore" style Ashtanga yoga regiment in 2 weeks. 1. Are their any other style of 'ashtanga'. 2. I was thinking of integrating very light free weight circuits as a 'booster' to my weight lost and muscle firming goals. What are your opinions? 3. is their any more radically physical regiment than ashtanga? herve - debra bobier ashtanga yoga Sunday, March 30, 2003 6:24 PM Re: ashtanga yoga Yoga in Mysore Hi Catherine, I study in Mysore and would be happy to help you in anyway I can. There are many other styles which incorporate a vinyasa flow, but purists would say that there is only one true 'ashtanga vinyasa' yoga, which is the set of series as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore. > 2. I was thinking of integrating very light free weight circuits > as a 'booster' to my weight lost and muscle firming goals. What > are your opinions? Again, purists would argue against that for the reasons that it will interfere with your practice - tightening muscles that you are trying ot lengthen and expending energy that coudl be better expended on your practice. I would tend to agree with them in the first instance - perhaps once you have established a steady practice you can 'experiment' by adding in things like weights, but try ashtanga on its own for a good while and I think you'll find that you have no need for weights. Also bear in mind that it can take up to 5 years (or more I suppose) to learn the Primary Series, so don't assume (unless you are a regular yoga practitioner already) that you will just launch into a full practice and be needing something extra. A traditional Ashtanga practice (6 days a week except moon days) is a very difficult thing to maintain - 1 1/2 to 2 hours every day. If you do not find this physically challenging (and if, as oyur post reads, an intense physical challenge is what you seek) then you can add more. But remember that you should not really be aiming for more than 1-2 pounds of weight-loss a week and IMO a 6-day Ashtanga practice will easily help oyu achieve this. > 3. is their any more radically physical regiment than ashtanga? It's not the yoga style that necessarily determines how 'radically physical' your practice is, but the way you practice. It would be possible to dawdle through the Primary Series in an absent fashion, barely breaking sweat and totally missing out on the benefits of yoga. Likewise it would be possible to take the most 'relaxing' yoga video sequence and incorporate vigour and energy into it such that you finish the sequence a trembling wreck. It's all down to you and the effort you put in -- as you reap so shall you sow! That said, if you are into controversially physical practices I think Bikram yoga takes a lot of flak in that department. Guest guest
ashtanga yoga is ashtanga yoga, there is only one kind. weights can be ok. i would start but just putting your energy into your yoga practice for a bit as you get started. if you need to lose weight or gain muscle, ashtanga will do that. ashtanga is physical, indeed, so if you are looking for a physical and mental challlenge, you will find it in this yoga. ashtanga yoga, "jean-marie herve michel, jr" < abulafia3000@o...> wrote: > I am starting a "Mysore" style Ashtanga yoga regiment in 2 weeks. > > 1.
