Guest guest
I feel that my power is even greater during menstruation days, and no obstacles for practice, quite the opposite. In many cultures women have been honored during those days and recommended to take it for themselves. In my own experience the power AND pleasure during the period have increased related to how close I am to myself and my emotions and my body. Releasing yourself is releasing the female power and menstruation becomes NO difficulties only more sensitivity to your own body and its power. Guest guest
I would like to add my comment on practice and menstruation. I read from a textbook from the Bihar school by Swami Satyananda that says the reason why we do not do inverted postures during this period is to prevent blood from flowing into the fallopian tubes. While he did not comment on whether we should practice or not during this period, I think it is wise to at least not perform inverted postures. Namaste.... --- Lillemor Heidner <lheidner wrote: > I feel that my power is even greater during > menstruation days, > and no obstacles for practice, quite the opposite. > In many cultures women have been honored during > those days > and recommended to take it for themselves. > In my own experience the power AND pleasure during > the period > have increased related to how close I am to myself > and my emotions > and my body. > Releasing yourself is releasing the female power and > menstruation > becomes NO difficulties only more sensitivity to > your own body > and its power. > > > Lillemor > > > > [Non-text portions of this message have been > removed] > > > SBC DSL - Now only $29.95 per month! http://sbc. Guest guest
In Ashtanga Yoga, the rule is no practice for the first three days of menstruation. Guest guest
There is absolutely no medical or scientific basis for the "blood flowing up the fallopian tubes" rationale.
Guest guest
All these 'rules' concerning practising during menstruation were 'imposed' by Brahmin men - the fact is that they have a problem being around menstruating women. Blood flowing back up the fallopian tubes? - come on guys, get real. Surprisingly, a woman's body can cope with being upside down without all the blood running into the wrong places. OTOH, it is really nice to have a few days guilt-free rest. Ashtanga is a practice devised for 16-year old Brahmin boys, and it is TOUGH for women, especially older ones. (or should that be the other way around?: TOUGH for older people, especially women). So like others in this discussion, I started by braving through and practicing all month, 'cos I know my body can technically cope with it, but hell, its really nice to have a bit of a legitimate rest now and then, so now I take period days and moon days. Feel much better for it too! - "Jolene Phee" <pheejolene ashtanga yoga Tuesday, June 24, 2003 6:34 AM Re: ashtanga yoga menstruation > I would like to add my comment on practice and > menstruation. Guest guest
I have experimented with not practicing and practicing. I would encourage you to listen to your body and also to honor yourself as a woman and take at least a day or two of rest. I have asked some MDs about the inversions and have heard mixed opinions, but you do want to be careful that you do not start to lessen or lose your flow if you practice a lot. That is a sign that you are going to hard. jai! ashtanga yoga, "Annie Gurton" <annie> wrote: > All these 'rules' concerning practising during menstruation were 'imposed' > by Brahmin men - the fact is that they have a problem being around > menstruating women. > Blood flowing back up the fallopian tubes? - come on guys, get real. > Surprisingly, a woman's body can cope with being upside down without all the > blood running into the wrong places. > OTOH, it is really nice to have a few days guilt-free rest. Guest guest
That was a reply that made me smile very much, as I personally been studying with Swami Satyananda, and was by him personally initiated into the Dasnami order for almost 20 years ago, so I can guarantee you that I am in no way contradicting that wonderful mans teaching. It is only so that I am a woman, and he is a man. If you also follow up on his teachings he also says that we all transcends until we unite our shakti (female/body) power with shiva (male/spirit) and then shiva comes down with her, and then he follow her. So no matter what, I believe I listen to my body more then whomever's 'rules' that may be, with due respect to all wonderful, spiritual and heartful men. Guest guest
That simply is not true about taking three days of rest. Taking three days of rest keeps the cycle very regular. There are other reasons to rest. As far as the Brahmins and their rules, yes they have different rules than those we are used to. It is true that women menstruating cannot perform puja, but the rules about menstruation are not imposed on anybody. Given the kind of practice it is, it is very important to take three days rest. Ask Saraswati if you have the chance to go to Mysore. Trust me, she is not the kind of lady who is pushed around by anybody.
