Dear FBL,

Your advice and insights are always very much appreciated, but you seem so grave

and rigid. While I also prefer the more purist take on Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga,

let us not forget the joy and openness in our practice both on and of the mat.

In any case, could you kindly please provide more elaboration on internal heat

and menstruation?

Namaste.

This is Ashtanga

In Ashtanga Yoga, we take three days of rest - first three days of

menstruation. The reasons for this have nothing to do with

"blood flowing up the fallopian tubes" or any other such

horsehooey, including "men imposing rules on women" - all

fiction. It has to do with the internal heat generated in the

practice.

Also, I will remind you that this is a message board for Ashtanga

Yoga. Someone asked about how menstruation is handled and

I answered. Do whatever kind of yoga you want and do whatever

you want during your period. This board is for Ashtanga and in

Ashtanga Yoga we take three days off. No arguments. Have an

opinion in response to that, but that is what is done and in my

opinion, for good reason.

I have been practicing this method for more than several years

and I can tell you that it is very important if you practice Ashtanga.

Thank you Julie for offering the larger picture. When yoga is happening no

matter what you call it it's still yoga.
