Guest guest
hi ashtanga yoga is great and i love it but it is not the only form of hatha yoga avaiable to your mother. If we compare yoga to other eastern traditions such as martial arts, then ashtanga would be considered a hard form like say karate ( tai chi, would be a soft form). Perhaps at your mothers age a softer form of hatha yoga might be benifical, i could very well be very wrong, what i would reccomend your mum should do is take several classes in differnt styles and discover a style that she enjoys, that may very well be ashtanga or it could also be any other form, good hunting and much joy in the discovery. >"jorge m e n n a barreto" <jorgemsp >ashtanga yoga >ashtanga yoga >ashtanga yoga age and ostheoporosis >Fri, 27 Jun 2003 17:35:16 -0300 > >hello group: >my mother is 68 and willing to start ashtanga. she has also had some >problems of ostheoporosis, although not serious. i was wondering if >ashtanga would be too tough for her or even provoke injuiries, or if, >adequatelly practiced, it would be ok. do you have any recomendations on >the subject? do you have students that age or with similar ostheoporosis >problems? she would be practicing privately with a certified instructor... >thank you >jorge > > > > > > _______________ Find a cheaper internet access deal - choose one to suit you. http://www.msn.co.uk/internetaccess
Guest guest
I once worked privately with a woman with osteoporosis in her sixties. we could not do ashtanga at first, but focused on alignment (iyengar style) to activate her legs in the standing poses so that she could bend more effectively from the hips rather than the back muscles. passive backbends were contraindicated. eventually we were able to do a slightly modified ashtanga practice with great results! --- jorge m e n n a barreto <jorgemsp wrote: > hello group: > my mother is 68 and willing to start ashtanga. she > has also had some problems of ostheoporosis, > although not serious. i was wondering if ashtanga > would be too tough for her or even provoke > injuiries, or if, adequatelly practiced, it would be > ok. do you have any recomendations on the subject? > do you have students that age or with similar > ostheoporosis problems? she would be practicing > privately with a certified instructor... > thank you > jorge > > > > [Non-text portions of this message have been > removed] > > > SBC DSL - Now only $29.95 per month! http://sbc. Guest guest
Please tell your mother to take up ashtanga! There are plenty of people who have started late in life, and although it is tougher, simply because the body lacks flexibility and strength, both those things quickly grow in the same way as they do with a young body. As with anyone else, it is all about perseverance and regular practice, and don't let the age of the muscles and joints become an issue. There are plenty of younger people with daunting physical problems who successfully take up ashtanga. Age is just a number. Annie Purple Valley Yoga Centre www.yogagoa.com (PS next season at Purple Valley Retreat we will have Gwendoline Hunt (aged 74) taking an Ashtanga for the Over 40's 2-week workshop. Dates to be confirmed but probably early March 2005.) - "jorge m e n n a barreto" <jorgemsp ashtanga yoga Friday, June 27, 2003 9:35 PM ashtanga yoga age and ostheoporosis > hello group: > my mother is 68 and willing to start ashtanga. she has also had some problems of ostheoporosis, although not serious. i was wondering if ashtanga would be too tough for her or even provoke injuiries, or if, adequatelly practiced, it would be ok. do you have any recomendations on the subject? do you have students that age or with similar ostheoporosis problems? she would be practicing privately with a certified instructor... > thank you > jorge > > > > > > > > > > ashtanga yoga > > > > Your use of is subject to > > >
