The other day at the book store I was perusing the yoga books and noticed

quite a few books on power yoga (Bender and others). Other than some

modifications of the postures is there any difference compared to ashtanga?

Anyone know where to practice ashtanga on Oahu Hawaii?

thanks

Rob

Ashtanga in SF area

I'm sure there are a million places but I don't know what they are.

I'm going to try 7th Heaven in Berkeley. What else? I can only really

consider SF city and Berkeley, no further afield, no Marin, no South

Bay, etc.

Thank you!

There is also a place called greenpath yoga on Lombard

in san francisco. Seventh heaven is a great studio.

Leah Nicole is fantastic and they have a couple

teaching some mysore classesin the morning who I dont

know very well but I have heard they are quite

traditional and have done some serious time in mysore

Re: Ashtanga in SF area

Oh there are tons of places- 7th Heaven is great, 4th Street Yoga in

Berkeley, Piedmont Yoga on Piedmont Ave in Oakland, Monkey Shala on

Lakeshore in Oakland, and those are just in the East Bay... In SF you

can look at these reviews and the list of studios with the respective

ashtanga teachers listed:

It's Yoga

848 Folsom Street

Call for schedule: 415/543-1970

Drop-in: $10, Three months for $150, Introductory offer: $90 for 90

days of unlimited classes

With a predominately younger crowd, It's Yoga is probably the hippest

place to practice Ashtanga yoga. It's lofty, airy, smells faintly

like incense and is very industrial-like with high ceilings, large

windows and white brick walls. Wooden cubicles are available to store

your personal belongings. The classes are 95 percent physical and

serve well for a rigorous workout. It's Yoga offers photocopies of

the postures used in their classes, which are perfect for those who

are just beginning or for the more advanced who want to work on

postures independently. The 4:30 classes are recommended; the late

evening classes are very crowded

Namasté Yoga Studio

50 Oak Street, #307

Call for schedule: 415/974-9391

Drop-in: $10 or $45 for five classes

Namasté is a dimly lit, intimate studio with beautiful hardwood

floors located above the International Center Health Club. The

schedule offers daily Hatha classes in the Iyengar and Ashtanga

styles. Students range in all ages and overall are not too New Agey

or spiritually whipped--generally a pretty down-to-earth group. The

Ashtanga classes are vigorous, while the Iyengar are more restorative

with the use of various props, restful poses and deep relaxation.

It's Yoga - Larry Schultz - downtown San Francisco, CA

http://www.itsyoga.com/

Greenpath Yoga Studio - Clayton Horton - in the Marina - San

Francisco, CA http://www.greenpathyoga.org/

SomaYoga -730 Florida Street, UNIT 23 @ between 19th and 20th San

Francisco, CA http://www.somayoga.com/

Castro Yoga - in the Castro San Francisco, CA

http://www.castroyoga.com/

S.F. Astanga Yoga - Meir Lesham - San Francisco, CA

http://www.sfayoga.com/

Rhythm & Motion - San Francisco, CA http://www.rhythmandmotion.com/

Amrita - SOMA San Francisco, CA http://www.amritayoga.com/

That is all I could find in 5 minutes - Happy Hunting!

I am definitely not an expert, but you have to be careful with power

yoga books. While Beryl Binder Birch is preaty accuarte, others are

not. From what I understand, Beryl Binder Birch did learn under

Jois but coined the term "power yoga" to give it a more American

connatation. A lot of people have jumped on the band wagon, but

have changed the sequence considerably. For instance, I was in the

library the other day and saw a book by Baron Baptiste and he called

his stuff power yoga, but the sequence was way different.

BBB did not learn from Pattabhi Jois. She is basically a fraud.
