Hi Lori!

Iam glad you found out about ashtanga yoga! I hope your love affair with it will

grow!

If you dont have a Yoga teacher then i the next best thing is a good tape and a

senstive mind/body connection..... which dvd did you get? Remember if it hurts

your doing it wrong

www.ashtanga.net this site has a great book with lots of varations on the poses

to help you learn them its called the practice manual....give it a look

Your 20 and worried about flexability.......it will come in time! remember

flexability of the mind is much more important than of the body! I am 21 and my

body continues to open! but remember flexability of the body is not the aim of

yoga! liberation is!

www.jivamuktiyoga.com

this site has some great books that you can buy...my favorate is called

jivamukti yoga you can also get it at www.amazon.com

Now about practie...how much should you practice? well traditionally 6 days a

week with sat. off and full and new moon days off too. this may be too much for

you to do so on days that you are really busy with your life out side of

yoga.....try jsut doing the sun sal. and some of the closing series.....the book

by david swenson has short forms of the primary series that you can do too if

you need suggestions

keep down doggin it

Hello everyone,

i'm new to ashtanga yoga.. i've just ordered the dvd for beginners and i

can't wait to start it!

i'd like to ask some questions, since most of you have been practising

ashtanga yoga for a long time.

-i'm 20 and is it possible to improve flexibility after this age?? i mean

can i get to an advanced level after practising ashtanga yoga for a long

time??? can i be able to do the postures comfortably?

-is it enough just to practice by dvd?? Well i live in Turkey and there is

no ashtanga yoga here! not that i know of.. i'd be glad if someone knew

about 'ashtanga yoga in Turkey"...

-how much practice is good for a beginner?? is it too much to practice

everyday? or do u recommend less?

-i've tried yoga for a couple of times, and i just loved it... but after i

learned about ashtanga yoga, i thought "that's what i want to do". and i'm

quiet serious about it. if i want to start teaching someday, how can i get a

certificate??

Thank you for your help!

Great, except for the fact that Jivamukti Yoga is not Ashtanga so

the book wouldn't really help directly, and that David Swensen

has not been a serious student of Pattabhi Jois for a very long

time and his book with all of the modifications presents a

teaching method that is antithetical to the principals of Ashtanga.

It is fine if you want to do David Swensen Yoga.

Only in extreme cases would I recommend this, but I think John

Scott's DVD is probably the best way to get it without access to

any sort of teacher. Also get the Yoga Works Primary Series

tape so you can actually see how the practice is put together and

what you are working towards.

how do you know how serious of a student david swenson is and why does it

matter how long he has been with patabhi jois.

jivamukti yoga rocks and david is awesome and creative yoga is not

antithetical to ashtanga at all.

i just wonder why some asthanga people need to be so elitist sometimes.

yoga is about expansiveness, not about narrow interpretations.

bill,

some people only like to follow one leader ..... like jois and thats

ok......some people like to mix it up and take what they can get from a bunch of

teachers.....thats ok too........

some people have found Guru in Jois.....thats cool

other people who i know who do ashtanga yoga did not see what the big fuss was

about when they meet jois......thats cool too

some people feel the need to find fault with others......thats not cool

the yoga sutras teach us that finding fault with others is a sure way to loose

our peace of mind!
