Guest guest
David Swenon went to Mysore in 1977 and learned Ashtanga Yoga from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and has been teaching the same authentic system what he has learned. His book on Primary and Intermediate series is a valuable guide for a Ashtanga Yoga aspirant. The modifications are present, if you cannot do the original posture which is indicated first. As T.K.V. Desikachar says, Yoga should fit individual needs and not the reverse. To that effect, the modifications help a person to learn in a gradual way, and get there eventually! John Scott's DVD is definitely good, but David Swenson's book is equally treasurable! Great, except for the fact that Jivamukti Yoga is not Ashtanga so the book wouldn't really help directly, and that David Swensen has not been a serious student of Pattabhi Jois for a very long time and his book with all of the modifications presents a teaching method that is antithetical to the principals of Ashtanga. It is fine if you want to do David Swensen Yoga. Only in extreme cases would I recommend this, but I think John Scott's DVD is probably the best way to get it without access to any sort of teacher. Also get the Yoga Works Primary Series tape so you can actually see how the practice is put together and what you are working towards.
