travel from san francisco to bangalore

hi, i am hoping to spent april in mysore and have been trying to get

a handle on how much my plane ticket will cost. i'm thinking that i

will take 6 weeks off work, giving me a week on either side of april

in which to travel. all of the tickets i have priced on orbitz or

expedia run north of $2k, is this normal? cathay pacific has fares in

mumbai for $1,200 but then i would need to book something else

(perhaps a smaller in-country airline) into bangalore.

 

does anyone else have ideas on how to get there affordably? i doubt

i'll bring much luggage, is there any way to just bring a carryon and

then sell my luggage space to some cargo company?
