The idea of being able to do a jumpthrough, let alone place my hands next to my hips and rotate my body in order to do a jump back (or handstand!) seems nearly impossible. Does anyone have any recommendations that I can keep in mind during my practice? I realize I should be engaging my locks, but they still don't seem strong enough. Thanks for any help! Guest guest
I too have this same problem. I am fairly tall and it is very difficult for me to jump through during a vinyasa. I used to have the same problem, and I just assumed that it was because my legs are so long.... but with the advice from a great instructor, I have mastered the jump through now. since the legs are longer than the arms they have to be as parallel to the floor as possible during the jump through. keep your hips as low as you can as you jump forward... its basically that the body stays in a full forward bend as it comes through the arms. and as always remember to exhale deeply... the exhalation will let u move deeper into the forward bending position. now as for jump backs, I havent quite got that yet lol. Guest guest
Practice beginning arm balances. In crow, (kakasana) try straightening your arms and floating your feet up under you. That will start to build the internal strength that you need. You will start to see that those moves come from a natural progression. It eventually will feel like you almost don't have a choice. You float up to the next movement. Unless you have a lot of arm strength, muscling through it is not an option which is a good thing because the transition should feel light and playful. Guest guest
Just take your time. Moving too quickly may frustrate you in the long run. Also, don't compare yourself to other students in class. The core strength comes with consistent practice. It's been a year for me and I am still working on all of what you are speaking of. Guest guest
Hey thank you all for the great advice. I will definitely try and incorporate some of your techniques and see what happens. It will be challenging to say the least but it is all about overcoming obstacles. Thanks again. Guest guest
After receiving some really good advice I have been able to develop my jump throughs. They have come along way and I now have another question. During downward dog, my hands are stretched out above my head. When I do the jump through, I come to rest way too far forward and have to move myself back down on the mat. What am I not considering? Thanks again. ------ Layne layne Liquidtravel.org <http://www.liquidtravel.org/> <http://hinduism.about.com/library/weekly/aa022200.htm> HarleysNguitars1 [HarleysNguitars1] Thursday, January 15, 2004 8:03 PM ashtanga yoga Re: ashtanga yoga jump backs, jump throughs In a message dated 1/15/04 8:44:54 PM Eastern Standard Time, layne writes: I too have this same problem.
