Hi!!

I live in NYC...so I can't help you with the LA thing. However ...I just wanted

to mention that when I started Ashtanga 3 years ago...I just jumped right in.

If you attend a regular class...just ask to me sure it isn't a Mysore class.

The studio I practice at does offer beginner workshops...but this is a new thing

at our studio. Try attending a regular class. Sit toward that back and watch

the first class and join in when you feel comfortable. Good luck! :)

ashtanga yoga Help - How To Get Started with Ashtanga?

Hello all:

I have been practicing Yoga for almost a year and am very interested

in Ashtanga. I have read a number of books and have been recently

begun trying to find beginner/intro or instructor lead classes in Los

Angeles but am having no luck. I've called a number of studios in the

Los Angeles area and I've been told that I can come to a self-lead

class and "follow" but I have to admit I'm a little intimidated.

I'm very interested to hear how others have gotten started with their

practice and if anyone knows of any intros or workshops or good

classes for beginners in Los Angeles.

Thank you in advance. I really appreciate any help or advice anyone

has to offer.

Hey,

I live in LA and I'm also very interested in Ashtanga,

though I haven't found any classes that I can attend

due to my busy schedule. However, check out

http://www.yogaworks.com.

Go to "Custom Schedule" on the left-hand side of the

page.

Then select from the Styles drop-down "Ashtanga"

Tereza Scharf teaches an open to all levels Mo, Tue,

Wed, Thurs, Fri 4PM - 5:55PM class in BH. She gives

personal attention and will help with any of your

concerns or modifications.

Sometimes, watching others practice for a while helps.

So you could probably go back in the room, watch

others practice and join in when you are ready.

=====

Love does not enter unless invited

So never meets resistance:

Creative energy flows naturally

>From a state of rest

Thus the Spirit of Love penetrates all

In its motionless embrace.

Earthly creatures, reflecting this

Watch each dream come true.

Strong desire creates rigid structure,

The abode of painful separation.

I think led classes are the best way to jump into Ashtanga, although Mysore is

the best way to refine your practice. If you try a led class, don't be

discouraged if you feel a little overwhelmed, it's a lot of information to

absorb at one time -- 42 postures, not to mention the transitions between. But

if you like it, I strongly encourage you to stick with it, it's incredibly

rewarding.
