Guest guest
Hello! Actually there seems to be great yoga teachers in that area. Some people are not so interested in studying with Jois not because he's not a great guru but because some trainees seem to not like the atmosphere at the center therefore they sometimes opt to study Mysore Style Ashtanga with other teachers in the same tradition. Guest guest
The assumption you have about Guruji being the only teacher to study with in Mysore is not correct. Sharath has been teaching his own classes for quite some time and he leads them everyday (except moon days and Saturdays) in the setting of his grandmothers old house. He begins teaching after he assists the last class with Guruji at the Shala. Many serious practitioners choose to study with him for a number of reasons. The number of practitioners in the class is much smaller than with Guruji, the monthly pass is less expensive than at the Shala, Sharath will be taking over the practice in the years ahead, he is the one that assists at the Shala and is mostly responsible for putting people in their adjustments. There are others reasons people I know have chosen to study with Sharath instead of Pattabhi but I leave it with the examples written above. Another well loved teacher with many western practitioners in Mysore is Venkatesh at his studio Atma Vikasa. He has developed his own series of yoga postures and leads many workshop style classes. His back bending is a wonderful complement to the Ashtanga series which many people practice in the afternoon hours after their morning Ashtanga practice. Also the cost of his monthly pass is $100.00 U.S(at least it was that last year) instead of Pattabhi's $350.00 U.S. (I am Canadian which changes that cost to $500.00 and add on another $200.00-250.00 administration fee for the first month of practice). Not every western practitioner who is spending time in India can afford this amount to practice yoga. A friend of mine went to Mysore while he was travelling India for some months to explore the yoga community there. His cash flow was limited so he hung out with people who were practicing with Guruji and Sharath. Sometimes people do that. Another teacher who is getting more attention is Sheshadri who is a former student of Iyengar who now focuses on the Ashtanga series. He is the only teacher I have heard of in Mysore who allows yoga students to 'drop in' instead of having to pay a monthly fee. My original e-mail had nothing to do about asking advice as to who I should study with. That was never the purpose of my letter. I was simply giving a short of back story so that those reading it with helpful information regarding the specifics of the opening and closing of the Shala could pass that information on. I feel as though you misunderstood. I was and am seeking information regarding the opening and closing of the Shala. For example do you know that Sharath is away from the Shala in Goa for the first 2-3 weeks of December? This has lead me to wonder if Guruji will also be taking time off during Sharath's departure. Other than that I am confident that I know what I will be doing with my time in India. Dorion - A. I am deciding who I will study with when I am there. This strikes me as a very odd question. My assumption is that people go to Mysore to study with Guruji and only with him. His daughter and grandson assist but he is, I have always been told, the main teacher at all times. Why would you go all the way to Mysore to study with someone else?
