I have hard core runners and cyclist that are in my classes and after time

their hamstrings, inner thighs, and low back have released. Their practice is

beautiful. Vishva Devi

hey steve,

i definitely have lotsa experience with this one. i

used to be a competitive runner, gave it up for some

time, then found yoga, ashtanga specifically. it's

true, running really tightens the hamstrings so much.

i was fine until i started trying to run again, and by

that time i was so addicted to the yoga that i

couldn't stand how the running was inhibiting my

yoga...too tight.

then a little later i began running again, but would

practice my yoga directly afterwards to ensure i

stayed open.

and that actually worked pretty well. in fact, i

found in those days that the running beforehand was

really warming me up so that in yoga i was opening

even more. but the whole process became too much, and

now i'm just on yoga again.

let me know if that was of any help...i realize i just

spouted out a lot.

my overall advice is to run if it makes you happy, and

this is what my teacher said, but keep on doin' the

yoga, or decide what's most important to ya.

confused yet?

HI Steve

I am a yogi and runner - I find that there are specific asanas good for runners

- I like doing sun salutations very slowly in the morning - If you did this

practice regularly - over the course of a few months you would end up with a

very flexible and supple body.

I teach the sun salutation every morning at 630am - and Abiola teaches a special

Yoga for Runners on wednesday nights 8-915pm

So drop by some time - we also do privates

Hi all,

This is my first post. I've recently started private instruction in

Ashtanga. My hamstrings are very tight due at least in part to my

daily running routine. My instructor says that overcoming the

hamstring issue is almost impossible with runners and that if one is

dedicated to aerobic activity, cycling is easier on the body and

specifically the hamstrings. Does anybody out there have experience

with this? Is there a way to overcome tight hamstrings caused by

running? Is cycling more compatible with yoga?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve

My personal experience, I run almost 4 days, some 5 to 15 km each time. And do

yoga at the end of my runs. yoga has helped me deal with the tight hamstrings

faced by every runner. My hamstrings are considered pretty loose even when

compared to a person who doesn't run. in fact, i did not suffer from much

muscle aches last year when i took part in a marathon, mostly due to the huge

amount of stretching i did.
