Guest guest
Hi I started yoga in my 40s and ashtanga when I was 45. I'm a 48yr old male. Lino Miele is an inspiration for those of us beginning yoga later in life. He started later in his life as well. I agree that you have to be grateful for what your body allows you to do and that you have to persist and the body gives in eventually to stretching. Regarding back pain in forward bends, in a workshop, David Williams began emphasizing during the vynasa holding the upward bow about 5 breaths. This allows your body to counter all of the forward bending in the primary series. He said that he's been recommending this everywhere he's been teaching and people have begun incorporating it into their practice - so it's good to hold upward facing dog during a vynasa. hope that helps Namaste Arturo "Annie Gurton" <annie Re: Flexablity? There should be a GuideBook for older Ashtangis! I am now 55 and started at 50, never having stood on a yoga mat before. It is certainly true that the older ligaments and joints take longer to stretch and open, but open and stretch they will, with perseverence and peristence. jana <jana Re: Flexablity? regarding your stiff lower back, I have the same problem and I am 40. My back starts off fine but sometime in the middle of the practice, usually right after the paschimottanasanas it starts hurting. I now got used to it and just take it easy on vinyasas - doing cobra instead of urdhva muka svanasana and relaxing the back as much as I can in adho muka svanasana.
