Guest guest
hi guy, there is a rheumatologist studying at the ayri shala here in mysore, and i'll ask him today or tomorrow! i too have had wrist problems, but perhaps not as bad as yours. i found that losing weight, plus putting more weight on the underside of the knuckles during chaturanga dandasana, plus a lot of massage, has helped my problem recede quite a bit, if not go away entirely. russell - Guy Davis ashtanga yoga Tuesday, December 28, 2004 3:32 AM ashtanga yoga Arthritis Problem Hi, I suffer from a form of rheumatoid arthritis. I am a 43 year old man living in NC. I have started a practice usinge Swenson's series 1 and Berch's Power Yoga book. I have severe pain in the wrists. Right now I am able to do the 2x5 Surynamaskar however my flexibility is limited and during the precursor to upward dog (pushup position) I just can not put that weight on my wrists. It is agonizing. However I can get through upward and downward dog without too much trouble. I am focusing on my breathing and hoping that over time this condition will start to respond to the breathing and the postures. My question is if anyone on this group has had a similar experience and how they are doing now (pain-wise). Thanks so much, Guy

Guest guest
Russell, Thank you so much for this. I absolutely need to drop 20-25 pounds and I'm hoping the daily practice helps with that. I will work with massage daily also. I'm not far into the practice so I am hopeful that over the next few months I notice an easing of the pain. It has eased since starting in the past 2 weeks however it still can be excruciating at times. In any case I KNOW this is something I MUST do. I believe I can regain much if not all of my flexibility from my youth but that it will take years to do so. Guest guest
Guy, try getting with an experienced teacher, this will be the best way to figure out the wrist and arthritis issues. Best of luck! --- Guy Davis <guy wrote: > > > Hi, > > I suffer from a form of rheumatoid arthritis. Guest guest
Thank you for this. I would love to get with an experienced teacher. Unfortunately here in Asheville, NC I have limited resources. There are 2 asthanga classes held here in 2 different studios and neither of the teachers is what I would call authorized. There is a great deal of good already happening in the 2 weeks I've been doing the practice. I believe this is due to the oxygen intake and the blood flow going to my wrists. Because of the pain I would NEVER think of bending them or putting weight on them. And I'm certain this has been a BIG part of the problem. I especially think the 5 breath downward dog has been very beneficial so far. Do you have any suggestions as to a directory of authorized/experienced asthanga instructors so I might either travel to a workshop or perhaps once a month in the surrounding NC area? I feel very fortunate to be a part of this group. Guest guest
Hi, I've been practicing for a year now.I too have bad wrists from old injuries. What really heps me with the wrist problem is making sure I press my thumb and index figure into the floor, having all the weight centered beneath my knuckles. Also making sure that your hand is full spread ensuring the weight gets distributed evenly. This helps me out very much. Now I do not have arthritus, but my wrists were in pretty bad shape when i first started my ashtanga practice. I think supplements is another route you should look into as well as having more of a vegetarian diet(more raw foods)this will help with your weight and help your body absorb more nutrients. I have gone completely vegan and 80% of my diet is raw....that has help me incredibly over the last 6 months. hope this helps! Namaste, Dean Guy Davis <guy wrote: Russell, Thank you so much for this.
