Guest guest
Hi Joe! I hope you back is already getting better! I have an strong Iyengar background... so I don't know if ashtangis will have the same vision, but what I can suggest is to do is standing postures, addo muka savasana, supta padangustasana I (not to the side because you might compress the sacrum and lower back area) and then inversions with support (while doing sirsasana bend your legs and rest the tip of the toes on the wall, to avoid putting any weight on the lower back, the same while doing sarvangasana) but don't do halasana or karnapidasana and do not bend your legs in inversions. I would suggest to avoid doing any stretching or any strong posture to the lower back (twisting or backbending). at least for some time (you should show your doctor the pictures of the postures and ask him when you can do it)... In Iyengar we would suggest to work around the injured area but not the area it self. That means, work strongly your legs, shoulders and chest but avoid the lower back. I hope it hepls, and wish you the best enjoy namaste pia ps check the Iyengar site... you might have some article about back problems www.bksiyengar.com or even the Ashtanga official site desireablem4u <desireablem4u wrote: I am wondering if there is anyone out there who may have had back surgery and has been able to do yoga after surgery. Last week I had surgery on my lower back, L5 disk to be exact. The disk was bulging into my spine creating torturious pain down my left leg and numbness to my left foot. Since the surgery the pain is gone but I still have some numbness in my left foot. I am hoping to start my practice sooner rather than later. Does anyone have suggested postures for a yogi recovering from back surgery? Are there postures I should avoid? Thanks for in advance for your help. Peace.
