Yes, it was, if you are referring to the particular sequence of asanas that are called Ashtanga yoga. He did not invent the individual asanas, most of which are shared by hatha & other types of yoga, nor did he invent the eight limbs of yoga, but he put together what he learned from his teacher into a specific new system that he named "Ashtanga". >Though he is a world famous teacher (little known in India) in ashtanga, I was told that he teaches only asanas. He teaches only asanas because the westerners who are the paying customers for ashtanga aren't interested in the other 7 limbs -- myself included. If people would pay for it, he'd teach the other 7 limbs, too.
