I live in tropical northern Australia and everyone seeks out the shade as much as possible. Doing any sort of physical activity in the tropical sun, especially in the monsoon or wet season makes you sweat buckets and is not very pleasant. The sunshine here feels like you are in front of a steel smelter and you can literally see your skin getting sun-burn. Hugh
Guest guest
We have a summer practice on the beach- I love it but do find it a little distracting but I figure the benefits are worth it.
Guest guest
Also, remember that the Indan yogic writings are prone to exageration or hypebole. I am sure you have read in the Upanishads where they say, "if you do this pose faithfully you will live a thousand years, etc." But, sometimes I think there is a hidden benefit to many of the yoga ideas like this one. In my case, knowing that I should do yoga either before the sun goes up or after it goes down gives me more encouragement to get up early, around 5am, and do my practice while it is still dark. I like starting my day out with yoga, I feel good all day, and, by doing it in the early morning I am more likely to actually do the practice. Why is it bad to have the sunshine on you during asana? Does it (the yoga sutras) say? I have done many practices on many beaches and on my roof top in the early morning thinking the sun would fill me with warmth and energy...Am I hurting anyone (self including) by doing asana with the sun coming up? Does anyone else here ever practice on the beach with the sun or else where with the sun? Thanks. Let the sunshine In. Joe
