New York City's Ashtanga Yoga Shala teaches TRADITIONAL Mysore-style

Ashtanga, as taught by Patthabi Jois. It is customary for the teacher to stop

students

at an appropriate point in the series so that they don't injure themselves

attempting difficult/dangerous poses their bodies aren't yet ready for. In my

opinion, you can't put a price tag on saving your body from injury. Guy

Donahaye, Ashtanga Yoga Shala's director, is an excellent teacher. If people

want to

"get their money's worth" attempting Kurmasana, be my guest. Just don't

complain about Ashtanga being dangerous for the body when you have serious knee

injuries and can't walk.

Amanda -

i am also a graduate student and understand money

issues. i think that many have elitist attitudes

about yoga which seem to contradict the ideas behind

the practice itself. i give up a lot - particularly

social activities and creature comforts - in order to

afford my practice. i'm sorry that some have been

insensitive to your question.

i think that opening up the channels of communication

is the best way to resolve this issue. have you

talked to the instructor and told them that you'd like

to go further? i think that some instructors like to

see you come a few times to get an idea of what your

capabilities are before advancing you to the next

pose. perhaps this teacher just wants to see that you

are willing to make the investment (in time, not

money) before moving you ahead. you should talk to

them to see what the rational is. you are after all

paying for the class : )

good luck - ro
