Guest guest
For Mysore-style I'd recommend Guy Donahaye's Ashtanga Yoga Shala if you already have a regular Ashtanga practice. They also have a few led classes as well. Ashtanga Yoga Shala is located on the Lower East Side. http://www.ashtangayogashala.net Shiva Yoga Shala also has Mysore-style and led classes. http://www.shivayogashala
Guest guest
Amanda: New York City's Ashtanga Yoga Shala teaches TRADITIONAL Mysore-style Ashtanga, as taught by Patthabi Jois. It is customary for the teacher to stop students at an appropriate point in the series so that they don't injure themselves attempting difficult/dangerous poses their bodies aren't yet ready for. In my opinion, you can't put a price tag on saving your body from injury. Guy Donahaye, Ashtanga Yoga Shala's director, is an excellent teacher. If people want to "get their money's worth" attempting Kurmasana, be my guest. Just don't complain about Ashtanga being dangerous for the body when you have serious knee injuries and can't walk. Guest guest
Amanda - i am also a graduate student and understand money issues. i think that many have elitist attitudes about yoga which seem to contradict the ideas behind the practice itself. i give up a lot - particularly social activities and creature comforts - in order to afford my practice. i'm sorry that some have been insensitive to your question. i think that opening up the channels of communication is the best way to resolve this issue. have you talked to the instructor and told them that you'd like to go further? i think that some instructors like to see you come a few times to get an idea of what your capabilities are before advancing you to the next pose. perhaps this teacher just wants to see that you are willing to make the investment (in time, not money) before moving you ahead. you should talk to them to see what the rational is. you are after all paying for the class : ) good luck - ro --- "A. Guest guest
You can also see if your teacher, or another good instructor in your area, is open to a work-study arrangement.
