Guest guest
Hi I am sorry to hear that your partner has problems with her back - My advice is to take it easy also with the yoga - do not do back bends at all - that would propably increase the symptoms - standing forwards bends would be great. Guest guest
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Guest guest
Dear Tony, I would suggest avoiding forwards and backbends, because that works on the region. So what I would do in her place is lots of standings postures paying attention to stretch upwards (Iyengar method is great for that) Lots of postures with arms up, lifting up the ribcage, the sides of the body up, and tucking the pelvic floor (mulabhanda). All the postures we normally do as forward bends, she can do it in "L shape": tucking the pelvic floor and doing the posture with the chest up and the hands pushing the floor behind her buttocks. To open the chest she can do some mild back bandings with support: lying on the floor with some block, bolster, rolled mat or pillow under her upper spine stretching her arms backwards and upwards. Or sitting on the floor upper back resting on the edge of a chair and grasp the back of the chair with her hands, head resting in bolster or substitute. To warm up, if she likes to do sun salutations she should do modifications on "down dog-up dog vinyasa" so that she can just go from chaturanga to up dog ... Then she should probably know if the splitting is inward or outward or to the side, to be able to do an appropriate practice: if the splitting is inward (towards the front of the body) she should do some mild backbend WITH THE HELP OF A GOOD TEACHER!!!!!! but if it is outwards (towards the skin of the body) she should do some mild forward bends.... and etc. I hope this helps. Any doubts, do not hesitate in e mailing me.... I don't know if the explanations are clear enough. Namaste Pia
