Molly

Not sure where you live but you can check out David Swensons website

www.ashtanga.net

or

Tim Miller

http://www.ashtangayogacenter.com/workshops2005.html

Or

Richard Freeman

http://www.yogaworkshop.com/index.html

Haven't taken a workshop with Richard but have done david's teacher training and

workshops with Tim. Both are great.

For those of you who have taken David Swenson or Richard Freeman's

workshops, would it be suitable for those of us who have not yet had any

"formal"

(using that term loosely) ashtanga experience. I.e., no classes with an

experienced practitioner.

Thanks for your help,

Molly

Yes, a total beginner could take Richard Freeman's workshop. I've done a

couple with him and he structures them so that whatever level you are, you

will be able to participate.

I've only taken a teacher training with David Swenson, so I have no idea

what his weekend workshops are like.

Hi Molly,

without hesitation, I would say go along at your earliest opportunity.

Whilst I haven't studied with Richard Freeman, I have done various workshops

with David and he is without doubt an excellent teacher. I have never heard any

negative feedback from any other participants of the workshops either.

I've been lucky enough to study with some excellent teachers of this calibre

(John Scott, David Swenson, Danny Paradise, Tias Little) and I can't think of

any occasion where I've had any regrets. Teachers of this calibre have vast

amounts of experience in teaching at pretty much every level, and consequently

will almost certainly have a positive impact on your practice. Hope this helps.

Namaste,

Mark.

I have taken a workshop with David Swenson, and yes it is quite

suiteable for a complete an advanced practioner, a complete beginner

or someone in the middle. It does help to know the (or at least have

a good idea about the Primary Series sequence), but beyond that,

Swenson will teach to the level of his class. I have never taken a

class with Freeman, but I plan to when he comes to Chicago this

October.

Hope that helps,

JW

Hi Patricio,

Actually I don't use music during the classes I teach since I pretty much

only teach Ashtanga yoga unless it is a private student where I tailor the

class to the student's needs. So, I cannot say I'm very informed on good

yoga music. However, a couple of cd's that I really like and can imagine

being good for a yoga class are:

Planet Yoga -which is a variety of artists

Krishna Das, Pilgrim Heart

Deva Premal, The Essence

Vyaas Houston, Songs of Siva

Anugama, Shamnic Dreams II

Shravanam, Bombay Sri Jaieshri

Russil Paul, Bhava Yoga & Shakti Yoga

As for books, well I don't know of a real "teaching" yoga book. This comes

from experience both in teaching and your own practice. Having said that, I

have found inspiration and ideas from the following materials:

David Swenson's book is helpful in giving ideas for modifying the practice

for certain students.

Paul Grilley's anatomy dvd is super for understanding the body and the

differences between students.

The Heart of Yoga by Desikachar is wonderful & inspriing. There is a

chapter on teaching which I found sums up very well the qualities of a true

teacher.

Jiva Mukti's book is useful if you want to use music and teach sequences

other than ashtanga.

John Scott's book is helpful for giving detail and alignment in the

postures.

Yoga Journal has an online newsletter "for teachers only" which sometimes

has interesting articles. I think you sign up through their website (I

forget how I got on their mailing list).

I'm sure there are plenty of others that are very useful as well. But

hopefully this small list will help you. For me, these have been very good

for reference material and increasing my knowledge in the never ending

learning of yoga.

Good luck!!

Namaste,

Linda
