Guest guest
Why do you think that you should first inhale into the belly and then into the chest? I've heard breathing described that way in "traditional" hatha yoga like sivananda yoga but not in Ashtanga. andrew ___ ashtanga yoga [ashtangayoga] On Behalf Of pachi_wawa Sunday, July 03, 2005 2:47 PM ashtanga yoga ashtanga yoga beginner's question re: uddiyana bandha Greetings, I've been practicing Ashtanga Yoga for about a month and already feel like a new person. Unfortunately, I don't have a live teacher, so I've been very concerned about making sure I have proper form. I am using an Ashtanga beginner's practice video from someone who studied directly under Shri K. Pattabhi Jois. I've also carefully studied books by John Scott and David Swenson. Through a combination of all of these resources, it looks like I've got a lot of the fundamentals covered. I'm still not certain about the proper use of the bandhas, however. Can anyone point me to a good resource that explains the use of the bandhas in detail. I'm a little confused about breathing while holding uddiyana bandha. If we are supposed inhale through the belly first and then up through the lungs, it seems that uddiyana bandha pulls the belly in so you can only breathe with the lungs. Are there times when it is appropriate to breathe only with the chest, not utilizing the belly at all? I would appreciate any advice on this. Thanks. Guest guest
I have a little background in other styles of yoga that use "belly breathing" and my mistake has been to assume that this is done in Ashtanga yoga as well. That said, are the bandhas supposed to be held at all possible times in Ashtanga yoga? When I do Suryanamaskar A and B, for example, the only time I engage my bandhas is during samasthidih. Thanks again for any advice on the matter, Will ashtanga yoga, "Andrew Bartelt" <abartelt> wrote: > Why do you think that you should first inhale into the belly and then into > the chest?
