Philosophy and Pranayama This course will place Ashtanga Yoga in the wider context of Patanjali's Yoga Sutra as well as introduce the practice of Pranayama. The Yoga Sutra is divided into four chapters and we will focus primarily on the first two - the Samadhi Pada (chapter on samadhi) which includes Patanjali's basic definition of yoga, obstacles and methods for overcoming obstacles and a description of the various stages of samadhi, and the Sadhana Pada (chapter on practice) which includes a description of Kriya yoga and Ashtanga Yoga. Sanskrit Alphabet A ten week course starting September 22. Thursday evenings. Inside Out Ashtanga Deconstructed ashtanga is a format for analyzing and deconstructing the anatomical components of the postures. The first week of the month will focus on forward bends, the second on side bends/hip openers, the third on twists/hip openers, the fourth on backbending, and if there is a fifth week in the month, on inversions. This class can help you bring awareness and clarity to your ashtanga practice, and also serve as an aid for those who may be challenged by certain poses The postures will be broken down into their component parts and related to other similar postures in the primary and intermediate series (you don't need to be practicing 2nd series to do this class). In this way, specific principles about how to move the body and breath in relation to a type of posture will be learned. This class will be inspiring and fun! Drop ins $16.
