Thanks to all who shared their advice on food before practice. If I may

add advice for Kedar on asanas when you have bronchitis: In Lino

Miele's book, Ashtanga Yoga, on page 58, it says that, "Kurmasana

expands the chest, increasing the capacity of the lungs and bronchi,

and the amount of oxygenated blood to the heart. It is beneficial to

anyone suffering from...Asthma and Bronchitis."

Re: breathing problem

i would suggest do chest openers

i.e. bhujangasana, dharunasana, parighasana, salamba sarvangasana

that's all i can think of now... hope i was able to help...

Hello,

I am new to this site and in fact, am new to yoga. I was interested in

what type of yogic breathing "Kurmasana" is? Can you give me a little

information on it or direct me to a website, etc? I have been having

trouble breathing when I do my asanas. I find I am constantly

hyperventilating, (I guess its called). Perhaps a breathing technique

would help me.

Thanks, Evelyn

Hi Evelyn,

Kurmasana is not a 'type' of breathing but it is an

asana, or posture....

If you are new to Yoga, it is not advisable you

practice that pose yet, as it requires deeply open

hips and back.

In Ashtanga, the only type of breath advised to use

during asana is called 'Ujjayi' breath, which helps to

prevent hyperventilation. Is it done by constricting

the throat during both inhalation and exhalation. You

end up sounding like Darth Vader!!

I highly recommned though you try and find an

experienced teacher who can guide you in this

essential aspect of Asana practice.

Best of luck!
