Guest guest
There is an inscription in front of the famous Ramar temple in Madhurantakam temple which reads: 'Yaanta Bhaanta Nishanta' Can members help me understand what this stands for. I was informed the meaning of part of the phrase (Yaanta Bhaanta)., but I am not sure what Nishaanta, by itself, stands for. Comments welcome. [Madhava Replies:] nishaanta = nisha+anta nisha = night, evil anta = end Hence "nishanta" means (1) End of the night (dawn) (2) Destroying the evil Please feel free to correct me in case I am wrong in giving out the meaning. Thank you. Regards, Madhava
Guest guest
namaste, The Monier-Williams Dictionary gives these meanings: [http://www.uni-koeln.de/phil-fak/indologie/tamil/mwd_search.html] Cologne Digital Sanskrit Lexicon New Search Entry nizAnta Meaning (%{-zA7nta}) m. or n. `" nñnumeral-close "' , daybreak Mn. iv , 99. Entry nizAnta Meaning mfn. allayed , tranquil , calm L. ; customary , traditional A1s3vS3r. (cf. %{yathA-n-}) ; n. a house , dwelling , habitation Ka1v. ; a harem , seraglio Dharmas3. ; %{-nArI} f. a woman living in the inner apartments W. %{-vRkSa} , m. a tree near a house (?) g. %{utkarA7di} (v.l. %{-ntAvR-} and %{-nta} , %{vR-}) ; %{-ntIya} mfn. ib. ; %{-nto7dyAna} n. a garden near a house Das3. This would indicate that the meanings would vary with the context. Regards, Sunder ----Original Message Follows---- "Madhava K.
