There is an inscription in front of the famous Ramar temple in

Madhurantakam

temple which reads:

'Yaanta Bhaanta Nishanta'

Can members help me understand what this stands for. I was informed the

meaning of part of the phrase (Yaanta Bhaanta)., but I am not sure what

Nishaanta, by itself, stands for.

Comments welcome.

[Madhava Replies:]

nishaanta = nisha+anta

nisha = night, evil

anta = end

Hence "nishanta" means (1) End of the night (dawn) (2) Destroying

the evil

Please feel free to correct me in case I am wrong in giving out the

meaning. Thank you.

Madhava

namaste,

The Monier-Williams Dictionary gives these meanings:

Cologne Digital Sanskrit Lexicon

New Search

Meaning (%{-zA7nta}) m. or n. `" nñnumeral-close "' , daybreak Mn. iv , 99.

This would indicate that the meanings would vary with the context.
