I thank him sincerely for sharing his knowledge with us. With respects, Ravi ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Fri, 7 Jan 2000 22:41:04 -0500 (EST) Sadagopan <sgopan Ravisankar S. Mayavaram <msr Re: maata~Ngii Dear Sri Ravi Mayavaram : Sri Mathangi and Raaja Mathangi are description of the energy behind the ninth object of Transcendent Knowledge ( Dasa MahA VidhyA ) .In this form , She is also known as Moha Raathri or the Elephant power . Maatangi Tantraa describes her form for AavAhanam. Elephant power or Matangi is invked for establishing the reign of peace and prospertiy . Besides the association as the daughter of Sage MatangA , Lord SivA based on His auspicious virtues as the destroyerof the evil is known as the Elephant ( MatangA ). Hence His divine consort is recognized as Maatangi. Elephant is the symbol of royal power and the power of domination ( King of the forest ). The other nine Dasa MahA vidhyA are: MahA KaaLi, TaarA , ShOdasi,BhuvanEsvari , ChinnamastA , Bhairavi, DhUmavati , BagalA and KamalA . There are significant Taantric literature regarding all of them .Each one of them have their own TantrAs for worship. As you know , Mathurai MeenAkshi sitting in the ManthriNi Peetam is recignized as Maatangi . Guest guest
Some more on this subject: I found more about sage maata~Nga is brahmaaNDa puraaNa. He is described as great sage and who has accomplished everything. It so happened once he was his friend himaavan. During that time it seems himavaan boasted to maatanga that "I am the father of gaurii". This was not received so well by the sage. This incidence provoked the sage to undertake an intense tapas on ambaaL. Finally when SHE appeared to him in the form of mantrinaathaa, he asked HER to be born as his daughter, so that he will become equal to himavaan in that respect. And ambaaL granted the wish. That night SHE came in his dream and gave tamala flowers to him and by that gift, he and his wife siddhimati gave birth to ambaaL and who he named as laghushyAma. That daughter is a manifestation of raaja shyaamaLa. Because SHE was born to him, the world even today remembers him through HER name maata~Ngii. Because of this, even other daughters of sage maatanga attained the status of shaktii-s and they serve Raja shyamaLa. -- This I found in both in a sanskrit edition and in the english translation. This is the north-indian version of the puuraaNa. But the funny thing is I could not locate the sahasranaama or trishatii (but I could locate khaDgamaala stotram). Where do they occur? At least it was not in the 36th chapter. --
