Guest guest
yat.h j~naatva matto bhavati, stabdho bhavati, aatmaaraamo bhavati || 6 || Having known that, one remains becomes intoxicated, still, and subsides and delights in the Self. Atman is sat-chit-Ananda and it is same as brahman. The bliss of Atman is unfathomable and ever new. One who attains the knowledge of Self through undivided devotion to the Lord, gets the taste of this bliss and remains intoxicated therein. As we spiral our way to the top of the mountain, we realize that all paths finally merge into j~nAna and it leads to the knowledge of the Self. It is this knowledge which destroys the bonds of aj~nAna. Knowledge and bhakti are not different from each other. They depend on each other. To say I am devoted to God, one should know who God is. Atleast one has to have an approximate idea. If this conception of God is sattva and it strengthens the devotion which leads to greater knowledge and this mutually reinforcing trend culminates in AtmajnAna. Having known the Self, one subsides there as it is the only true refuge and reality. -- Please contribute your comments and corrections. Guest guest
namaste, NBS # 6: [tr. extr.from Shri Deglurkar's marathi commentary]: The previous two sutras discussed the attainment and gains from devotion. This sutra discusses the knowledge of devotion and of the one worshipped. "matta": One who gets to know the nature of devotion begins to dwell in that ocean of love, oblivious of all other attractions. This is the state called 'intoxication'. It can be induced by other causes too---alcohol, wealth, intelligence, &c; but it is ephemeral and eventually harmful. The intoxicated state of devotion is one of bliss supernal. In the words of the Bhagavata Purana: eva.nvrataH svapriyanaamakiirtyaa jaataanuraago drutachitta uchchaiH . hasatyatho roditi rauti gaaya\- tyunmaadavannR^ityati lokabaahyaH .. [XI:ii:40] While singing the name of one's dear God and following the vows of worship, with the mind filled with exceeding love, such a devotee loudly laughs, cries, screams, nad dances like one possessed. "stabdho bhavati": meaning motionless, peaceful. taa naavidanmayyanushha~Nga baddha\- dhiyaH svamaatmaanamatastathedam.h yathaa samaadhau munayo.abdhitoye nadyaH pravishhTaa iva naamaruupe .. [bhagavata Pur. XI:xii:12] Just as the yogis have no awareness of the environment during samadhi, and remains motionless; like the rivers loing their separateness on joining the ocean; the gopis had merged their hearts in the thought of me, and forgot everything else. "aatmaaraama": The devotee takes total delight in keeping the mind resting in one's own true self, eliminating any joy in the senses or their obects [indriyaaraama and vishhayaaraama]. yo.antaHsukho.antaraaramastathaantarjyotireva yaH .
