Guest guest
i remember the following sentences in one commentery on the tripura sundari ashtakam for the second sloka "kadambavanavAsinIm kanakavallakIdhArinIm mahArhamanihArinIm mukhasamullasadhvArunIm dayAvibhavakArinIm vishadalOchanIm chArinIm trilOchanakutumbinIm tripurasundarImAsraye " comm: "kanakavallakIdhArinIm"--which means holding a viina golden 1) " vina stands for for the universe and its music for the orderly behaviour of all therein. it is the player who produces the music. in itself the vina is lifeless. in like manner it is the devi who brings about harmony among all the things of the universe. she is the moving spirit in all but for her, there would be only chaos. sruti says," he shining everything shines;through his lustre, everything shines." tvameva bhAntam anubhAti sarvam tasya bhAsA sarvam idam vibhAti.(katha upanishad) 2) It is also said that the stem of the viina represents the spine called meru danda in the yoga terminology, and the viinas strings for the subtle nerve currents(the nAdIs)that run through the spine. 3)The very sight of the viina , the queen of the musical instruments , is regarded as a blessing, for, of its parts, the stem is regarded as rudra, the strings as uma ,the shoulder as vishnu, the tailpiece as lakshmi, the gourd as bramha, the midpoint as sarasvati, the binding nerve as vasuki, and the jiva as moon.So the devi's playing on the viina reminds that it is she who gives energy to all the deities to perform their appointed tasks. from the book Tripura Sundari ashtakam--ramakrishna math publications--madras we have a smaller version of the above commentary in our links-- articles/tripurasundari any corrections are welcome.
